Well Daryl, you make a compelling case... Now can we convince you to come down as a guide? ;-)
Seriously, looks easy enough to get to. Found the road quickly on both Microsoft Streets & Trips, and nice quad maps on the Superstition Search & Rescue site.

I am up for either. However, I will perhaps encourage us to remember we will be carrying our gear and not everybody may be as physically up for a good hike.

I don't know if that makes a difference. I know what the view looks like at sunset from Lost Dutchman. I don't know what it looks like from Peralta.

Lost Dutchman is easier, but even from there it's a 1 mile hike to get to the best views (up the siphon draw trail, in my opinion).

Peralta is a short hike, but the hill out of the lot can be pretty big if you don't hike much.

Lost Dutchman is the safer/easier bet. Photos from either will be great though!

No chance on coming out to guide!

Personally, the hiking thing is the only thing that worries me.
I say the easier hike, the better. But I don't want to bring down the group, either way.

Just as a side note, does anyone know if there is cell phone reception up there? Just to make sure...

Yep, just north of Seattle. We followed Steve up this way to keep him out of trouble!

Lost dutchman state park is probably the best bet for all.

Peralta is on the east side of the Sups and has a less classic view of the mountains than Dutchman and not really a good sunset location at the trailhead... But...

If you make the 1.5 mile hike UP the Peralta trail to the saddle you could get a potentially great sunset view of Weaver's Needle. However, it is the most challenging of all your hike possibilities.

I've never taken a sunset there but it has spectacular potential. Here is a daytime westward view from there:

It is a several hundred foot climb. This next image shows looking back DOWN the trail toward the parking lot invisible around the corner:

The trailhead is on BLM land and there is a user fee ($3, I think).

Here are some other views on the Peralta Trail:
.........

My Ansel Adams submission and a couple other challenge submissions were taken at or near Peralta.

I vote for Dutchman. We will recall we will also have to hike out in the dark with our gear. I'd love the adventure of Peralta, but I'm quite sure not everybody would feel the same.

Given all the info, I too think Dutchman is the best bet. If anyone wants to do Peralta, I could be convinced for another day ;-)

Peralta trailhead is actually NFS land and they recently removed the pay stations as they realized that they were breaking their own laws by charging access (it was making too much money compared to what maintanence costed)! Thus now access to the trailhead is free, as it should be.

Lost Dutchman is a State park.

Another option just to confuse things!!! Just beyond Lost Dutchman on the same road is the road to the Firstwater Trailhead. About 1 mile into that road is a trailhead to a little known and little used trail called Jacobs Crosscut. Access is free, any car can get there (about a mile of good dirt road) and the view is very similar to what you'll get from lost dutchman as it's only 2-3 miles away. Also, you can take that trail right into Lost Dutchman if you are up for a 2-3 mile hike and don't want to pay the state park fee. The hike is very easy. It's flat and easy to follow.

I had hoped to be able to get away to do a bit of photography/ GTG but the race schedule is looking pretty nutty, with stuff happening from the Wednesday I get there right through to the Sunday night.

If anyone wants to come out and shoot a really unique event, I think there might be some interesting scenes at the Ironman.

The 2500 people mass swim start would be good in itself. Then look out for the 'JellyBelly' cycling top on the bike & give me a cheer ;)

OK, I'm leaving this afternoon. I should have some access down there, but not every day. I will plan on being at the ranger station at Lost Dutchman around 4:45 PM on Saturday.

If anybody needs to get ahold of me, my cell phone number is three six zero six zero nine nine four four zero.

I'm looking forward to it!

Right on have a safe trip down! See you Saturday!

This is happening on the 7th, right? I fell asleep at the wheel navigating the past two pages. ;-)

My wife is scheduled to deliver our 3rd little one (first girl!) on the 10th, and I'm attending a motorsport event at Firebird this weekend (friend is a team owner/driver), so the 7th might be a stretch ... but if I can make it, I'll be there at 4:45. :)

Yes, sorry, I should have said Saturday the 7th...

Wow... the Phoenix event is a "real" triathalon, not one of those mini-events some folks pass off as 'Ironman'.

I've run several marathons(so has DrAchoo) and have an idea what you are up against and full well understand how that can occupy all your time in PHX.

Just like it is not as if you could get lost in the desert, I thought everyone could run a 2:30 marathon, don't you? LOL!!!!!!!!!

Yup, it should be a fun day. 7 hour warm up then a quick marathon to finish it off.

Man, I'm just looking at the moon coming up and I wonder if we'll be lucky enough to have the moon rise over the superstitons. That would be some sweet action. SWEET action!

78% moon, but it won't rise until midnight on the 7th.

Aww, that's a bummer. On the other hand it will keep the stars bright.

I'm really getting psyched about this...
So, what do you all think lenses wise? Should I bring all of mine? Could some of the people coming swap lenses and trade and what-not? I really would love to try out Fritz's wide-angle lens up there...

EDIT: Clarifying Canon lenses*

I'll have both of mine in my pack and I'm happy to let some people take a try if they want.

I'll pretty much have all of my WA glass along, though I may have to make some strategic decisions as to what to actually carry up the trail... I'd think that at very least I'll have the 15mm fisheye, which has done very well for me in that location ;-)
I'll prolly also have a 24mm prime and the 24-70L. If I can fit it in, I may also bring the 8mm fisheye, just for fun. Don't know if anything longer than 70mm is really needed. I know I didn't use the 70-200 last time up there.
