Mmmm, those pictures are making me salivate.
OK, someone get authoritative and pick a place and time to meet. Sunset is about 6:45PM as long as you aren't behind the mountain. I would suggest we meet at the latest at 6:00 and more like 5:00 to be able to shoot some daylight stuff. You can get good night stuff about an hour past sunset so that will be 8:00ish.

What's the worst that could happen? It's not like anybody could get lost or anything...

Oh, wow.
That was great.
Right, Steve? :P
But seriously, that time sounds good. Shouldn't we all bring our tripods for the shutter speed? |

I'd agree with the Doc that 5:00 would be a good meeting time. It does take some time to hike up the trail a ways for the best views. BTW, for really good starry skies, it's best after 8:30 or 9:00 PM. Tripods will be a necessity, IMO. A small flashlight is another good item to bring, as well as a light jacket. Temperatures can drop quickly out there.

Heh heh. The last time I shot there, I walked in one mile, and back two miles. Oops... forgot to leave a trail of breadcrumbs!
I also lost my sunglasses on the trail :-P |

The scary part is that it happened to the northeast of Goldfield; they even have a very loud whistle there that they blow a couple times a day that can be heard from miles around. Thank goodness it is not the heat of the summer! It gets HOT then.

OK, OK... here is the plan...
1-Don't tell anyone where you are going.
2-Don't take any food or water no matter how hot it gets or hungry you are.
3-Compass, maps, directions or walk known trails?... forget about that stuff. Only whimps use maps.
4-Eat spiny plants, dig in washes for water, use Palo Verde for shade and shelter. Remember, sleeping on hot rocks is uncomfortable.
5-Watch where you sit or how you bend over. Cactus spines hurt.
6-If you hear rattling... run the other way.
7-Oh... and take enough memory cards and charged batteries for pictures.
Yup, that should about cover it.

Oh... lest I forget... there are two coyote packs with about 50 animals that waunder the area. If they bother you at night just tell them you are Steve's friends and they won't eat you. Wellll... maybe not.

I remember that, but I forgot which ranger station we are talking about. Lost Dutchman?

Yeah I think that's the one here is a Map from the Lost Dutchman State Park. The entrance just off of 88. |

Or we could meet in one of the day use areas. That way we might be closer to where we want to start the hike. I don't know just throwing it out there. :-) |

oh goodie, I come back & all is decided!! I like that :0)
How about 4:45 at the ranger station, it will give us enough time to decide which path to take and the rangers will have a good idea about which trails are looking better when we are there (wildflowers should be sprouting up real soon!)

Note: Lost Dutchman charges like $6 per car to get in. Peralta trailhead is free. There is a school on the road to Peralta trailhead where you could meet up and pile into the rental cars and trucks for the 7 mile dirt road.
From Peralta there are three trails. I'd suggest hiking up the small hill on the Dutchman's trail and heading down into barkley basin. THere are very few places I'd rather be at sunset and it's an easy hike. You don't really get a view of the setting sun, but as the sun sets the mountains around you slowly turn from gold to orange - red -then purple. And in the spring there are few better places then Barkley basin, filled with hedge hog cactus, prickly pear and one of the most impressive stands of saugauro around.
