Good thread! Generally I don't use flash at all, probablly because my internal flash is pretty much useless since I can't control it and it gives it a very obvious flash look to my images. If I can't get the photo right without it then I'm better of waiting for the lighting to change or moving a real light around. However, this past weekend I did something that I've never done before, something that was mentioned in this thread; I used flash outside on a bright day! The results were exaclty what I was looking for! The situation was that my subject was sitting under a tree on a hiking trail with a nice vista of a lake behind her. The beautiful background was very bright, but important that I expose correctly, and the shadows under the tree and on her face were very dark. I took two shots, exposing for the background and the foreground and planned to edit them together in photoshop but then I decided, what the hell, I'll experiment with the flash and see what happens. The result was exactly what I would have wanted. I probablly just got lucky this time but the experience did help me look at my flash, which I had considered useless, in a whole new way. |
