I bought my S9500 last August. At the time I didn't realize I was going to get into photography. This month I bought a D80. Now my wife is wishing that we had bought a compact camera so that she could take a camera with her to small events and not worry about size.
I'm not to familiar with features in compact cameras, what is important for everyone and what might be important to a photographer. I'm sure something with wifi would be cool for me, but I don't know that she would use it. Any suggestions. I think the most important thing is that it has a nice display and that it takes nice pictures. Since buying a Nikon, I am a fan of Nikon. Took a look at some of their compact cameras...nice...but I don't know how to tell good from bad.
I'm not in any rush. She has other priorities. So getting a nice camera for her as a surprise gift sometime in the future would give me enough to gather some information. |

I know you stated you are a nikonian but when it comes to peashooters check em all.
I got the Canon SD630 for my wife last year and she loves the day lights out of it. 3" LCD (no view finder...which is useless on a peashooter anyway) and it handles noise quite well. Wives like the movie feature as well, I am impressed with quality of the flix that come out of this thing. Easy to use. We got a kook-cord (surfing term) the cam just dangles around here neck when we/she go out to shoot.
The most important thing to look at probably is how well they handle noise. A camera that has an ISO 800 setting but is only useful up to ISO 200 is a gimmick sales point.
Size is important, if it won't fit in the purse she might not like to carry it.
You know stuff like that...

How are you able to tell, without actually viewing them on your PC, which ones have less noise?
My wife, being the fashionable one, will likely want something that matches her style. Not the best way to pick a camera...but that's another reason for the Nikon. It looks nice...at least that's what she told me. I'll probably have to drag her into a shop and just get her holding cameras. |

Hi There I have the Sony as below and these things rock - I am a Nikon user through and through for all my pro needs but these Sony's knock the socks off and look great too.

The A630 A640 the G7 and S3 are loaded and while their featureset make you think you can throw them in auto and go... you cant.
Awesome cameras witht he G7 and S3 having great zoom and bad fringing.
Id look for a sony or a simple nikon.

Contax SL300R or the Contax U4R or even better but slightly bigger the Contax TVS Digital
Available on ebay absolutely style and crispness at its best in a compact camera. I still have my U4R allthough it was run over by 3 cars and the 3rd car tyre caught it on the edge and sent it across the street into the curbing, I was able collect it to find the only damage was a slightly broken battery door (replaced) lent it to a friend (drummer) to go on tour and he threw it in his drum bag and broke the screen but this thing STILL WORKS and still produces brilliant images.. REAL CARL ZEISS SYSTEM!
SL300R - 3.2MP titanium and leather in a leather case
U4R - 4MP titanium body leather inlay and leather case
TVS digital titanium body 5MP

If low noise is an issue, the Fuji F30 (I think the model number is correct) is supposed to be really good, though I haven't used one myself.

I'll add in another voice for the Sony. I have a DSC-T9 and it is a great pocket shooter. Image quality is very high (better than I expected), screen is great and easy to compose with, and the image stablization really helps. The camera is quite flat, so fits in a front pocket (or purse, I'm sure) easy and weighs virtually nothing. The only problem I've had with it is that the lens cover (which also acts as the on/off switch) can occasionally come open in my pocket while I'm walking around.
The new T10 was actually selling for about $30 bucks less than the T9 sitting right next to it at my local shop the other day, and with these and the T30 series I think you can get them in different colors, which may be important to your wife. |
