They'll be even more confused when "www" doesn't work.
The correct address is //noisemaker.dpchallenge.com

Less so than you think, actually. It's becoming so common that it's not so necessary.

For the small price of a domain name, get one. $5 a year or so. Cheap.

Still have to either point it to his portfolio or have a site to put up. Id give him one on my server but i dont like hosting redirect domains.

Zone Edit will point for free. He can still point it to his DPC site until he can get something better set up. Many sites, Yahoo, Bravenet, etc. offer free hosting...usually with small ads, but there are probably some out there without.

I think so. If you're creating a business card then I assume you want to look professional. So I'd rather see "DustinSteinbach.com" than "noisemaker.dpchallenge.com" Like I said, it's about $5 per year (not per month) and then you can set up an email account like "info@dustinsteinbach.com" rather than use a yahoo/hotmail/whatever account. Plus, you'll have the domain reserved for when you can set up a more professional looking site than your DPC page.

Godaddy is cheap, and offers a free hosting site with your domain name (and some other stuff.) You can easily point the domain name to DPC, or create your own site.
The catch is that the free hosting site caries adds, but the least expensive paid hosting is also cheap. How much do you want to spend, and how much is image worth to you? |

It DOES make a difference in this case, though. For most sites, yes, you can ditch the www, and it won't make a difference (you can go to dpchallenge.com itself, for example, and that's fine).
But when you're talking about prefixes like this, the www is gonna screw things up. The "noisemaker" part of the web address is in a sense replacing the "www," and is not going to work with the www in front of it.

noisemaker, a pretty simple site could be set up if your friend isn't able to help. With JAlbum or PhotoShop Album and all you could have something whipped up in minutes.

I use clickimage.com to "host" my portfolio..its free untill you start to sell proofs and such through the site. only thing i dont like about the site is that I can only put 9 photos per "folder". you can set up the name ( //cher-photography.myphotographer.com ) and its pretty simple to use and set up (which is a huge plus for me since Im code challenged).so far I have not reached any limit on space and dont remember seeing one posted anywhere. you can even add music and they have several templates to choose from. they also have a search feature where u can be listed for possable clients to find you. also has a email.

YOu can go to godaddy.com and get a domain name for $10 or less. you can then 'redirect' it to whatever webpage you want, and change that as often as you need.
//www.christopherperryphotography.com goes to pages hosted on my ISP's free space, as does my //www.viewandchoose.com. Try //chris_perry.home.comcast.net/index.html and you get the same thing as //www.christopherperryphotography.com but without the re-direct bit.
Spend the $9. You also get a free email name with it too, so you can make your biz card look more professional.
