But you love your in-laws right?

Of course! But isn't it ideal to do what you love to do, and get paid for it too?

That is cool to get paid for what you like doing. This may sound strange to you, (I know you'll have a hard time believing that I could say something strange) but I don't want photography to ever be anything more than a hobby. I would never want to do it for a living. It's kind of an escape from everyday business.

That's why I will never be a wedding photographer. I wouldn't want to take the chance of screwing up somebodys big day. I do take photos at weddings but they also have a regular photographer. I usually take pictures at the reception and then just give them to the family. I just do it because it's fun.

Ok, I'm done with my .02 worth.

Sounds like me Bob. I've did it a few times for small family weddings but I always tell them to make sure they have someone else taking pictures too just in case I screw up.

I was in the enviable position of being paid for doing what I love, AND......not having to compromise my principles to do it. I used to restore, service, and maintain British sports cars and had my own shop in the heart of rural country surrounded by winding roads and beautiful fields.

I worked on cool cars for interesting and unique people and they paid me.

It has started on a small scale with my photography.

It will never come to fruition the way that my British car shop did because there are so many really good photographers out there, and the merely competent fighht tooth and nail for the few dollars at craft shows, galleries, and personal invitation trunk shows.

I've sold a few pieces here and there, but I have no illusions of ever being able to support myself with it.

I do want to be able to offset equipment costs a little.

That's where I'm at, too; I don't want the responsibility that goes with the one-shot go at a wedding.......I will take candids for an event......if they turn out good, super, if not, no big deal.

I do that for the church.....I capture candids, scenes around the church, and spur of the moment stuff at events. They just recently had a pledge drive and did a presentation where they used photos from people who had taken things like that and had them blown up to what looked like about 20X30. They had about twenty-five of these poater sized pics and about fifteen of them were mine. Now they're plastered all over the church. And I'm thrilled that everyone likes them!

I have started doing some portrait work and the way I am doing that is on an approval basis.....I will not charge a thing 'til I have pictures that the commissioner likes.

That should do wonders for my reputation after I have a few happy clients.

Mostly, I just give out 8½X11 prints 'cause I love the delight people have when they get them.

This is more than a hobby for me......it's part of my life.

I have a question that came to mind during my last rambling missive...

What's the percentage of the time you guys have your camera with you?

I *always* have mine with me....usually with both my 18-70 and my 55-200, but always with at least one lens.

I hardly ever have it... Which is probably my problem when it comes to taking good shots!

I am actually in transition to becoming a part-time professional photog. It's my dream actually, so I really hope it comes to fruition. I have an engagement photo booked on the 31st of this month and a wedding this August, in addition to the architectural shoot tomorrow. I haven't yet started an advertising, so I feel happy to have already gotten a couple of gigs. If I make it into the arts/crafts market here in Charleston, I will be selling out of a booth every Sat. I'm planning to take some more classes soon to hone up on studio photography and wedding. I just bought my first light set, too. Exciting but nerve-wracking!

Congratulations! I love to hear people getting what they dream of. I hope to one day get out of the software field into something more creative. I am not a member of the Team Suck Clubhouse but plan on in the near future looking to see if I can join. Good luck on your gigs.

I hope you plan on showing us some of these shots as we would love to see them. Good Luck!

Go, go, go! :) Congrats. How exciting! That's you and Jeb both, right? Christian, Mary, and Svetlana all exhibit their work.

Anyone else?

And Jeb, I'm with you 100% about just having the joy of seeing people's faces, but it's also cool to have others want your work. I've sold four prints so far, and while it's almost no money, it's fantastic. I mean, the idea someone wants one of my pictures enough to pay even $1 for it is pretty amazing. :)

yup. it's a super feeling indeed.

welcome back to jeanne too! glad she's finally home!

i'm just too tired and blah to do my idea for multiple light sources, or 'phones. i'll try for langdon's - i have an idea, if i can find the box i need in my parents' basement...

Yes Levjy I know what you mean i just sold two prints this week ( a frist for me) and it is a great feeling to have someone want to hang one of my photos in there home.

Oops - I meant to mention that Jeanne called to say she was home (I see you saw her post, Christian, in the Where You Live thread).

It's been one month to the day that she fell. I'm actually impressed she managed to post - she can't get her wheelchair to her desk. Maybe her hubbie typed it for her. I told her she needed to get a laptop. :)

I'm in cell phone, and I have some ideas for Langdon's birthday, but haven't shot anything yet. Right now I'm off to watch Alien, the Director Cut. *grin*

You take that back!

I have quite a few entries that suck!.......8>)

No I won't take it back! I don't even think your Minimalism shot sucks. It just DNMC. Now stop digging for complements. :P

I must be crazy, but I've put an entry in Multiple Light Sources. That's all I can say about it.
03/21/2007 12:13:53 AM · #2168
So um. ARGH.

I hate the fact that people are ribboning with shots that they only entered to not let their wpl teammates down. I mean, there's nothing to be done for it, but it just... being content with my scores is something I have to work to maintain and this type of stuff doesn't help.

Wow, two suckers on the front page of Grain. Is this a first? Now everyone is going to want in.
03/21/2007 01:06:44 AM · #2170
Yep! Congrats to Catherine and Jeb!

As for me, I'm now the proud owner of Melethia's "Zero comments during a challenge" ribbon for my grain entry.
03/21/2007 01:12:26 AM · #2171
Congrats first page Suckers Catherine and Jeb (and I hope you have the RAW of that Catherine, so you can print it for sale!); congrats to Jeff for the prestigious ribbon for no comments; and Kelly, don't let Larus' shot get you down - I think if he tripped and fell and the camera went off on the way down, he'd still come up with an excellent shot. He has a gift, that's all there is to it. And the shot is kinda funny. By the way, I love your shot in Time - has a lovely spirit to it that a lot of the "technically superb" shots lacked. :-)
03/21/2007 02:05:59 AM · #2172
Thanks. :-) Amazing how a few kind words can make me feel so much better.
edit: oh, and regarding the time entry - it is very cool that the "spirit" came across.. it was really awesome to be able to take the photo (see the photographer's comments) and awesome that what I was feeling was at least a bit conveyed. :-)

I echo above, congrats to you both.

Morning from the Emerald isle, where the weather is just going nuts.
OK what to shoot for this week.
Pop culture, spinning. Might go for a free study shoot this coming weekend also. If i have the time i might also get out for some more Street shots.

So what are you all shooting for?

03/21/2007 04:15:22 AM · #2175
Hey, is that shot of Catherine's underrated or what?

I think her offering is by far, hands down, better than anything else.

I'm definitely biased 'cause the shot moved me so much as a reminder of so many of the favorite places along the water that my family has been around all my life, but it's such a perfectly done shot on so many levels!!!!!

Anywho......this is the second time I've been "In the money", so to speak, and the scores dropped the last day.

I don't get it.

I feel kinda like a poser next to Catherine's shot, but I'll take it anyway.

I am kinda happy that this shot didn't beat my truck, and I am definitely doin' the happy dance!!!!

This 8th is a little more exciting 'cause it's 8th out of 394, whereas the truck was 2nd out of 130.
