I have a new student I am teaching. Her father was a pro-photographer. She is in the business of photography as a commercial designer. However, she knows nothing about cameras. She has her digital point-and-shoot. When she heard I was into photography she pulled out a Nikon FE, with a couple of lenses, case, all mint condition. She said she had plenty more film cameras at her parents house. Her father passed away, and while she would like to hold onto a few cameras, she needs to sell off most of them. I don't know what prices are good. She said that when she tried selling them at a local shop, the manager of the shop said "You are better off just holding onto them. You won't get much for them."

I checked on ebay, and saw this camera for as low as 50USD and as high as 180 USD. Which price would you think is more reasonable. I'm not interested in buying her cameras (I don't think), but I will help her sell them so I'm just looking for some advice here.

hmmm...which lenses does this camera have? My father passed away recently and I inherited his Nikon equipment (4 bodies -a F1, FM, nikkormatt, and another one, and about 6 or 8 lenses). All are manual focus, but a couple of them are really good glass - including a 1.4 50mm, a 2.5 105mm and a really nice 75-150mm zoom. I am really starting to use them on my DSLR. They do work really well, except for exposure metering. I just take a couple test shots and set the exposure by trial and error.

If there is pretty good glass in the collection, I would look at those individually and see if you might want to sell them individually (or buy one yourself!).

Good luck.

Unless it's mint, I think $80 to $100 is all you should expect. Unless someone is a collector (and there are a lot of Nikon collectors), film cameras, particularly manual focus, just are not worth much anymore. You can find F5's for $500 or less these days. It's all about who is looking at the time your auction goes up. You can try looking for camera swap in your area, but my experience is prices are much lower at those than Ebay.
If you decide to list it, let us know.

I'm in Japan, so I doubt anyone will want to pay for the shipping to the states or anywhere else. Anyways, if you're still interested I will mention it to her.

You or your student might want to check out NikoniansYou can register for free and navigate their forums. The forum for lens is the Nikkor forum. You can ask questions and they also have information available in PDF and help file format to help you value your lenses and camera bodies. The camera you mention could go for about 100-125 in minty condition, esp. if you have the original boxes documentation, etc. Mainly for collectors. Like other posters indicated the 50mm 1.2, or 1.4 would be in demand in mint condition especially if they are AI or AI-s. Many of the older lenses will work with the D2x and D200 and still meter. The site has a forsale section but you have to be a paying member to use it. (25US) for a year. If she has a 50mm F1.2 or 1.4 AI-s MF I might be interested.
Good luck.

The FE is not such a great camera, IIRC, its main notable characteristic being super light weight. It was released as a budget camera, and does not enjoy the same fame as some other Nikon-built legends, such as the FM-series, which still sell at pretty high prices.
