I wrote in a comment asking the photographer to mail me and describe how he/she did with the light. I like the photo very much but I want to be sure about the light. I told him/her that it will be high score if everything is OK. I haven´t got any answer so I will score low. Is this alright or have I missunderstood the rules?

I guess you can only vote your gut instinct, but I, for one, try to give the benefit of the doubt. Rate the photo according to how you feel about it emotionally, technically, etc, and as if it is the only photo. I personally do not vote on photo's by rating them against each other. The challenge is per photo, so, I try to rate per photo.
If it is blatantly against the rules, suggest disqualification, vote and comment, and move to the next one. If you think they haven't met the challenge, then the first response I have given you is perhaps the best suggestion.

I for one vote on each photo assuming it is a legal shot; unless there is an obvious violation (e.g. using apples instead of pencils). I let the others who are experts (and may care more than I) examine the photo for illegal processing.
Remember, there are some very creative people here. Just look at the "garbage in ..." thread.

Ditto to Karen and Jim... If you believe the photo is illegal, you should vote on it as if it is NOT illegal and then request disqualification on the image.
