Yeah, part of the problem (and seen more on the 506 shots) is the crop. I'm usually using my 50mm f/1.8 at the venue they commonly play at. (As my 70-200mm f/2.8 is too tight a crop and my 12-24mm f/4 is not as attuned to the low lighting.)
It's a very small venue and cramped (with tons of kids behind me) and a lot of times I can't back up and it's a fixed "prime" lens.
Alas, I hope to see this issue disappear when I get a f/2.8 wide-tele zoom.
Of course, there are some exceptions. The last 506 I could have dropped lower and caught a better angle. If I recall there was something in the way there in the foreground and I was trying to avoid it. Also, sometimes I have better crops but the lighting changes (stage lights changing colors) blew the shot or it had too much motion and was out of focus.
But trying to learn and hone my skills each shoot.

Just wondering about breathing life back into this group/thread.
I've just started working with a band and would love to hear any more tips and advise for both on-stage and off-stage documentary stuff.

Interesting idea... I've put loads of tips on my blog here: //eyesopenmusic.blogspot.com
You need to go back quite a few posts though.
I think what put me off this original thread was that nobody actually followed the assignments I set... which IMO set up a solid foundation for photographing all the big-name musicians. People here seemed to just want somewhere to post their gig photos without spending some effort getting them better.
I wonder how many people here contacted a small local venue to photograph local bands? Not many I'll guess.
And really, if you follow the tips in this thread such as not cutting off hands, not having people look out of the frame, making sure the background is always part of the composition, getting atmosphere, etc etc you really can't go wrong.
I think what people really want is somewhere where they can put their gig photos and go 'look, look!' Unfortunately, not many people usually want to look at gig photos other than the bands' fans. That's not the kind of thread I'm interested in.

That said, there is a wealth of knowledge to be had for those who re-read this thread's content. |

Ditto what theSaj said. Six months ago I came across this thread when I was trying to do some children's theatre photography. All my photographs before this thread were useless; I read the whole thing, took all the advice I could gather, and the next time I shot at the theatre I got knock-your-socks off shots. I now have an on-going contract to shoot all the productions there.
Many thanks Bob! |

This project was closed about a year ago, I can't do much with it as I'm travelling around Asia! Perhaps someone else can take it over? In the meantime, anyone who is interested in gig photography can read all the information in this thread for inspiration. |

I posted a link to this as reference material. I can lock it if you prefer ... and you can have it unlocked later if you want.
You are in Asia ... I am in the western US ... it is not a good thing that we are awake at the same time : (

LOL, I hope you get some sleep soon!
I think locking this thread would be a good idea.
Cheers,
