How does a camera with a F/2.8-4.1 lense some how achieve F/7.1 at wide angle and F/8 at Telephoto in manual mode.

The camera has all sorts of stuff

- Rear Curtain flash sync
- Shutter and Aperture Priority
- External flash sync....

but with the aperture is it bullshitting or what.

Generally, f/2.8 - 4.1 represents the maximum open aperture ratio at the min-max zoom ranges.

f/7.1 is a smaller opening, meaning the iris has closed down to change the ratio to a higher f-stop (smaller opening), completely possible therefore. Or am I misunderstanding your question?

(edit for spelling, doh!)

No worries! No question is stupid unless asked a second or third time when not necessary. (Third time if a complex question!)

Cheers!

it's like when you check out the specs of a car, rarely do people bother about what is the lowest speed the car could go, the are only bothered to know how fast it is. the same concept with lenses, where people are more interested with how "fast" the lens is, which is the aperture.

Sigma actually sometimes lists ONLY how slow the lense is in the specs and ONLY how fast it is in the description lol.
