I've noticed from the forums that a lot of people seem to be quitting at the moment... perhaps this might have something to do with the fact that the current challenges are all HARD!!
There are lots of other reasons flying about, but I think this might be the crux of the matter. I think my average score is going to go flying down during the next few challenges. I have to say that the speed entries are very disappointing, but then mine is not so great either because it's a DIFFICULT challenge! So stop complaining about the lack of creativity, not meeting the challenge, etc, etc, blah, blah, blah.
Well done to everyone for persevering in the face of some tricky challenges.
I'd rather see an unimaginative entry than none at all.
Unless it has a really horrible border (just joking!). |

Nope, if I thought the challenges were too difficult I would just skip them.

All I have to say is that any shots for the "Night on the Town" challenge that look like they were taken during the day will score no higher than 3 from me... :-)
In terms of the challenges being "hard", I like that people have to work to get a photo that is appropriate for the challenge theme. If the themes were easy, simple and wide open (something like "Landscape") there would be too many submissions... which means the quality of the voting/comments would go way down, and you lose what (to me) this site is all about: learning how to take better pictures by looking at other good photographs and reading what others think about them.
The "At Work" challenge seemed simple enough, yet there were only 61 entries. Compare that to "The Letter B" (another member challenge) and there were 151 entries! |

Sometimes they are easy, sometimes hard.
It`s only a bit of fun.

D'oh! I knew somebody was going to mention the fact that the sun doesn't set in certain parts of the world! You'll just have to make sure your "Night on the Town" photo is taken indoors so you can't tell. :-)

I am a newbie to the site, only one submission so far, But i have watched several challenges come and go without entering . I find that the timeframe given for the challenges is pretty tight. One week is -in my opinion- too short. That's just "too bad" for me i know. I'm not wanting the rules changed.
I don't have the gear to create a studio at home so all my time and effort is used up searching for that right subject to shoot. Also given time differences i don't see the challenge topic until day 2 of the comp and then it finishes one day early (if you read my jpeg info anyway) because we folks "downunder" see the closing date before a lot of you Northern Hemisphere folks do.
I guess after all my waffling i am trying to say that maybe the quality and quantity of images changes so much due to the short time you have to find, set up, shoot, edit and post your submissions.
Now donning my flame suit :)
Let the torching begin. |

Like you I'm a newbie too. This is the first challenge I've submitted for. So far not doing well but I knew I would be happy just to place NOT dead last. some of the work here is amazing and inspiring. The challenges have been just that challenging and have challenged me to see something new every week like I'm sure some of you out there the pic you submit is not necessarily the best of the ones that you took while shooting for the challenge. I shot quite a few more pix the day I shot the pic I submitted that I'd be much prouder to have my name attached to but there isn't a category for "while I was out shooting for this challenge I shot this which is totally unrelated but better photo." Please except "cat sniffing flower" for my "road warrior" challenge submission |

You can put a "studio" together for next to nothing. It's been discussed in several forums and I think there is a tutorial on it as well. I could be wrong...

The challenge times are for EST. When I'm in Singapore, the challenge flips on Monday around noon and I have till the next Monday around noon to submit. I'm not sure which side of the date line you're on, but wherever you are, you have a full 7 days. The admins take timezones into consideration when looking at timestamps on jpgs.

In my opinion challenges are supposed to be hard, this is how one learns. |

I don't know about quitting. I'm most likely "taking a break" for a couple challenges, namely the 2 in the shooting stages right now. Maybe if there's a speed challenge for the 4th, I'll do that. I have no ideas for either of the other challenges. If I get one I'll submit. If I don't, I'll just admire everyone elses and I won't be heartbroken about it at all.

There are 168 hours in a week, and even though most people are sleeping for more than half of that time, I think a week is sufficient time for submitting a photo. You also have to be more open minded, its not that hard to think of something to submit and if it were too hard, there wouldnt be usually more than 100 submissions per challenge.
Challenges are supposed to be hard. This isn't a site for proffesionals, its a site for people who want to develop their skill in photography.
The reason I havent been submitting latley is because I dont have a camera now (see my profile) so you probably wont see any submissions from me until the next school year.

I think a week is a good time scale. Heck, if you can't come up with anything due to not having the time or the inclination then there's always another coming along 7 days later. I've been around here for about 6 weeks or so and submitted to 5 challenges so far but i have to say I'm finding it difficult to do them all because of the time, which doesn't bother me at all. You do what you can, have fun, enjoy, simple as that.
Hail DP for making me get out there with a purpose for once instead of faffing with 30 gigs of overexposed family 'snaps'!

Even if I dont participate in each challenge I enjoy thinking about the type of photo I would take for it,... that gives me inspiration!! After all there is life outside DPChallenge ;-)
I have to take issue with 'Luckydog', we 'downunder' get exactly the same time to take the pics in. Infact I have a full weekend as my challenges start and end on a Monday afternoon!
Keep up the good work with the pics and the voting!!

Luckydog - from your post, I'm guessing that your reference to "down under" means you're an Australian.
If so, then the cut off date is 2pm the day after the challenge date. (For example - the "Unanswered questions" challenge finishes on Sunday 6th July. That means, you'll have until 2pm Monday 7th July to submit - assuming you're on the east coast of Australia)
And I think a week is enough time. It means I can decide on ideas for what I want to shoot and then I have the whole weekend to do them in.
Gets me out of the house and doing something I enjoy :) |

Thanks for the info on cutoff times. Unfortunately in my line of work, One extra "working" day's grace doesn't help as it's dark when i go to work and dark when i get home again(not whinging though). I am enjoying my ever increasing interest in Digital Photography and do test my brain trying to think of something original for each of the challenges i have seen. Like i said "in my opinion" one week is tight, not impossible, but tight. I submitted my second entry to DPC last night "A night on the town" but have noticed that my quality of shot is well below my normal standard of work. I will continue to bust a gut trying to submit to the challenges as this is the best of all the photography sites i have come across and the first place i visit whenever i log on.
I am on the east coast of Australia by the way, and this is what i have to get up to everyday.... (Damn it's got a border!!!) :)

I always have problems wondering what to shoot.. Having a 15month old daughter acting like a camera magnet can dull your creativity.. The challenges provoke my thoughts and give me a reason to point the camera in another direction.. got to be a goofd thing.. |

Yes, I agree one week is SHORT. Not too short, just enough to make me rush my submissions(see my self-portrait :( ). The difficulty of the challenges is good IMO, they are making me shoot "out of the box". It's even got me putting people in my photos! As a Chef I have very little time to put into my hobbies, before DPC my camera would sit idle for months. Now I have a reason to shoot, I dont submit to every challenge, but i try to at least think of shots that would fit them. Don't change anything at DPC ( although I do vote for increased editing, ie dodge and burn ) it is a great site!

I'm embarrassed, so far, by how careless the one-week time frame makes me...which is purely my choice. But at least it's getting me out there and I'm taking the photographs, which is a good starting point. It's not like I can't sit out a challenge if I really blank on it - I've done that several times since joining and I'm sure I will again - but it still keeps me looking, which I think is very good.
I'm not sure everyone subjected to my photos would agree, but hey. :) |

Is the new challenge a Self Nude Portrait?
