Ok well didn't know what else to title this thread so that will have to do, Im sick of having my little 4banger calavier, its served me well these past 5 years but its starting to crap out on me. Im making roughly $1200/month and i think its time to upgrade to a better car, heres the specs im looking at.

4,6 or 8 cyl, dont matter
Fair gas millage
Speedy :D
Around $10,000-12,000 CAD ($8500-10,000USD)

One ive considered is a 97-99 Camaro, they have pretty good gas milage for a v8 (apparently they get more than my cavalier does (Cavalier's are known to have bad mpg for a 4cyl)) What else can you suggest? Ive always had a soft spot for trucks too, but i dont know them well enough to know where to start. So ya... go for it.

EDIT: Change in budget

the 2001 and up Montecarlo is nice also and you could prob get anything up to an 2004 SS for that money. I had a 2001 Montecarlo LS Sport and had great performance and awesome milage and best of all the trunk was huge.

this is my old Monte which I ended up selling to my father and this pic was taken in 2004 and its still just as nice to this day :)

It gets 30+mpg on the highway depending on conditions, its front wheel drive so its great in snow, 190hp 3400 V6, 4speed auto OD... there awesome cars. The Camaro you were looking at is also, I also have a love for those cars and Im currently working on restoring my mothers now mine 1980 Z28 which she bought NEW which is great as I have all the original documents for the car also :)

Not good gas mileage, but it sure is fun to drive. If you want a car with umph, Mustang is your ticket.

Since you're in Canada and you probably get your fair share of snow, how about something all wheel drive like a Subaru Impreza WRX? Those things haul ass (especially for a 4 banger), handle nicely, and you should be able to pick up a decent used one in your price range.

Where's RainMotorsports? He is usually all over this subject :)

its all a matter of taste. personally i don't like american cars but you might. if it were me with that price range i would go with something like a wrx/evo or possbily a vw gti or an s2000...something along the lines of that. the camaro with the lt1/ls1 is a good car though it has power for the buck i will give it that much.

I need a new car too - I can't afford what I like, and am bored by what I can afford.

I am however liquidating my inventory....if you want a ride.
96 grand caravan, $3500
93 ford taurus $750
90 jeep wrangler, lots of mods including chevy V8, $8900 w/ spare drivetrain

What I might want, if I can gather the cash... malibu maxx, legacy sedan or wagon. Ford 500 and fusion are interesting (to me anyway) or perhaps an impala. I looked at the other imports and I like subarus and they don't seem to want a premium for them.

I went to the Detroit auto show and have been to about 12 dealerships looking at everything out there...I can afford $6-8 grand so today that gets me a 99 taurus w/67k on it or cars with 130+k miles (no thanks, got that now and no payment).

Mustang would be nice, but I have 2 small kids and it lacks a useful backseat. "Imports" are more costly to buy and repair and not any better cars. I don't want small - I want the gas mileage though! I need about 14-16 grand to get what i want, er, can live with.

20 years ago i cared more about what i drove. i'd probably keep the 93 taurus but rust has gotten hold of it and won't let go!

lol everyone seems to think we get alot of snow lol, most we got in the last 8-10 years is 1/2 a foot. On average we get a few inches :P

edit: forgot to say that i like your suggestion, looks to be a nice car, something to look into. Keep them coming..

Well, that was going to be my suggestion. The Rex (WRX) is a heckuva car. It is turbo'd, so you have to take special care of that.

Otherwise- what do you need it for? Commuting only? Something sporty?

I drive a 97 Impreza Outback Sport. It's a wagon that's roughly the same size (length, width, etc) than a Ford Escort. I went offroading in it not too long ago, and got it sideways, got icewater up to the lights. The car kept up with my friend's Landrover, and my car is 10 years old with no mods. I will always own a Subaru.

Just my .02

If you have two kids, the Legacy Wagon is definitely something to look into. They are rugged cars and will last forever. You can get some good deals depending on where you are located.

I, personally, wouldn't buy a Ford Fusion or Malibu Maxx. Right now, I think you get the best quality from imports.

Kawana -

Yes, Subarus can take a beating. They are extremely dependable cars. Depending on the year, some Subarus have been known to have headgasket problems; only on the 2.5L. If you are liking the Rex, you can get a Rex wagon :D If you want some info, ask away. I did a lot of research before I bought my car.

Around $17,000 CAD (14,404ish USD)

Well In USD. You can get a new civic on sale for like 11,000. BUt your probly looking for lightly used with a bit of performance. There is no way in hell any Camaro including the V6 gets better gas mileage then a late model cavalier (2000-2003 and 2004/05) Unless there is something wrong with it. Now if you have an 1986 like my first car lol well what do u expect. I have had 3 Cavaliers two of the J-Bodies never heard such rubish.

That 28 MPG rating on the camaro is HIGHWAY... hell a Mustang is rated for that and the city mileage doesnt follow closley. Driving it to get the performance out of it will not yield these results.

You want a 4 Cylinder with bad gas mileage by a Base Model Jeep 16MPG and thats on the 5 speed. My V6 Dakota has 162,000 miles on it and still gets 19.5 of its 22 rated MPG.

96-98 Civics only get around 27 MPG versus my 93 Toyota Paseo that gets 29/34. Not sure what the newer civics 99-01 02-04 were getting but i can imageine the D17's getting a 30 MPG rating.

Driving your cavalier like a jackass will help kill gas mileage. Then again I did so myself.

Used Subaru's seem to run a little ruff, not sure why. Wouldnt Mind a WRX or either of the last 2 generations of Legacy's. older 2.5GT and newer 3.0 NA catch my fancy.

If I could find an importer, this would be my next car. I test drove a few of the older models when I lived near the factory. Lovely.
