I've been thinking and doubting about writing this thread, but I really have to get it off my chest..
After 2 weeks having my entry for the free study in the "entry-room", I made a stupid decision. I got it out, entered another one and posted the photos from the shoot in my portfolio. I wanted to share them SO much because I was proud of the way the shoot went and how the results were!!
After one day I realised I made a stupid decision, I pulled it out of my portfolio and entered it anyway.
I knew there might be some weird looks, like, hey, I've seen this one before, that ain't fair! I almost pulled my entry out of the challenge while we were in the middle of voting, because I felt very guilty.
Anyway, I just wanted to say sorry, next time I'll make a better decision, at the last day of the challenge-entering. This won't happen again for me ;) |

I don't know why people worry about that kind of thing so much. My only concern would be that some retreads would vote me down because they'd already seen the shot, or vote me down because they don't like me because I tend to be obnoxious.
Your punishment is to eat a bug.

I say no need. Bear_music did the same thing with his picture of whiterook. If I had a shot that good I would have done the same thing you did Hanneke. So I appreciate the sentiment but I think, personally, you made the right choice. :-D |

pfffff
happens all the time. Don't let it bother you.
Sometimes we look at a shot too much and get de-sensitized to it and don't realize it's really good and think less of it after a while, then the free study comes up and make the decision to enter it, even after it's been seen a while. You hid it away before the free study, which is the proper thing to do. |

@ Slippy: If someone enters a photo I allready know, I wouln't worry about it either, but it just felt bad for me.. Don't know. Just had to get it off my chest, you know?

I don't think you did anything wrong. You took the picture out of your portfolio and forum before the challenge started. I know - I had marked it as a favourite and wondered where it had disappeared to!
Don't worry about it. I saw one person made a negative comment on the image - that's childish. It's a great picture and deserved to get a good score. I was surprised it wasn't placed higher! It was certainly my top choice. |

I recognized both your photo and Bear's photo from the forums ... and I didn't let that get in the way of voting at all ... no worries, it is a fantastic shot ... you should be proud! |

I agree - no sweat. In fact, you're probably going to see one of my portfolio shots in the March free study. Quick! Go scan through all of them to see which one it might be. :)

I was thinking of entering one of my portfolio photos in the free study but I worried that it might seem unethical. So even though I had 2 shots in my portfolio that I really liked and thought they would score well, I didn't enter them (I had previously shown them in the 30-day where you live challenge). My free study entry didn't score that great and now I am sorry I didn't enter one of the other two that I liked better.
So don't worry about it! I'll know next time to enter the photo I like and not worry if others have seen it in my portfolio.

All of this said, it is worth it to remember that many of us still try to keep anonymity in mind when submitting.
Things like what hanneke describes happen, and there's no problem. On the other hand, I don't particularily like it when people "advertise" their shots either beforehand or during the voting stage - that to me is going way too far.
I have seen people have the same or very similar shot in their portfolio during voting, and even talk about them in the public threads (to get comments). I don't think that's fair to anyone. But there are so many things in life that aren't fair, sometimes it's hard to know what to do anymore.

Ursula, posting the photos was never meant to be like "advertising".. I'd NEVER do that.
I think the anoniminisyty (huh) is a great thing on DPC, and this is the very first and last time I "neglected" that unwritten rule even though it was not intended. Promise :)

Oh, yes, I know that. And I meant it that you shouldn't worry about it. Shucks, anyone who feels as bad about it as you do has nothing to worry about. It's the people that don't worry about it that concern me more :)
I was just trying to prevent what I think is the abuse of this, that is, when people intentionally post the same or similar image/s to their portfolio or to threads. Or when images are shared in an attempt to get higher votes that way. There's a big difference.

What they all said. Happens all the time. I try to keep from doing it, but I'm not immune. When I shot and posted Whiterook I had no intention of entering him in anything, and then when I looked back at a very weak February, he was the best thing I had done IMO, so I went ahead and entered him, hiding the portfolio shots.
If I made a habit of it (or if you did, or if anyone did) that might be a problem, but it will happen from time to time, especially in month-long and year-long free studies.
R.

It bothered me, but only this much: ----> [ ]. Had I voted, I would have still given it the 10 it deserved, regardles of the fact that I'd seen it in the forums. I'm glad it did so well. :) |

I was a little dissapointed to see a few photos in this last free study that had been posted to threads previously and had a lot of views and even favorites. And when I say a little, I mean just a smidge. And not so much because of the anonymity thing, because there are a lot of us who have recognizable models and who do self portraits. But more because you've already gotten feedback that it's a great photo and possibly tips to make it better, or you find out that nobody really digs it. So in essence, you've kind of prescreened how well it could do. And when I say "You", I'm being generic, not aiming at you Han. And I'm also not saying that that was the motive behind posting them, as surely it was not. But nevertheless the feedback was given and taken.
Apology accepted, but not neccesary. :)
I just hope, being that we have free studies every month now, that it doesn't start becoming the norm. I can understand seeing them in the "Best of" challenges because who's honestly going to wait a whole year to post a photo when they don't know if one that will come along that's better. And also, that's only once a year. Not every month.
