The sky is exceptionally clear here in Amman – Jordan tonight, and I have the perfect view too; I think I will take few shots; however if I can find the T-ring, that I have miss placed, I will use my 10 inch Meade LX200 GPS telescope of a 2500mm focal length for the photos; the image done by the telescope will barely allow for a 20 pixels area around the moon reflected on the sensor. Last time I had to take quit a few images to be able to get the whole of the moon; and a funny thing happened, I had some people watching with me, and some of the realized that I was having a hard time getting the whole moon, so one of them suggested "I step back a bit"!!!!
I think 10,000 miles would have done it.

No eclipse on the West Coast, but I got some pictures of the moon setting through some wispy clouds over Mt. Tamalpais.

A classic astronomy "oops" moment. Did you explain to them their error?? LOL!

No, not really. Wouldn't be nice to tell them the size of there err; so I let it pass.
But I did say the telescope was a bit heavy to move around, that was good enough!

This fantastic opportunity to see the eclipse - and right now there is a heavy cloud layer and rain in Cape Town - we haven't had rain or cloud for months and tonight it's dismal. Oh well it's one of those things.

My son was born in 1997 on a lunar eclipse :-)

Still no speed challenge :(

loads of pictures of a red moon? bit dull, and when trying to compose with an interesting subject in the foreground? well not everyone has long enough lens to make the moon nothing than a white (or red) blob in the sky.

FWIW, crystal clear here in essex.. hopefully it will hold for the next few hours.

Beautiful clear sky tonight here in South Africa. Got my spot on the roof booked. Just about two more hours to go!

Thankfully there are no clouds atm, but I don't know how to get onto the roof of our building :(. so I have my camera set up in the bathroom right next to the toilet. Pretty sure I look odd :P, thankfully its clean ( a miracle for 2 male students sharing I feel) :P

I am sat on my front door step with camera set up. The moon is just beginning to look a bit squashed.

It`s started.

What is the appeal of shooting the moon? 90% of them look the same with the better ones having slightly more detail and clarity. How about someone try shooting the dark side of the moon for a change? :P

Beat you to it! But would you believe, it was a perfectly clear sky 10 mins ago, now the moon is obscured by a huge bank of dense cloud. Hmpph.

Tuck sticking out at you (don't know how to do gifs)! ;¬P

I am photographing the moon because I can. I have never tried before, and it is something that I was curious to know if I could work out. And it gives me an excuse to sit on my front door step in the dark drinking a glass of wine and the neighbours think I am just a little crazy, rather than completely off my rocker....

Edit: typing in the dark doesn't work for two figered typists like me. Tuck=tongue...

I've got the camera in the upstairs window. Never shot an eclipse before, hence the fascination. It's very high in the sky here, and all I have is a 70-200, so this is nearly a 100% crop:

Back upstairs to watch.

Try here.

Maybe people take their own photos so they can use them as they see fit without worrying about copyright issues ... I certainly do : )

So does Isaac:

having to shoot hand held now as the moon is so high i cant see it very well from the window, so I'm hanging out the bathroom window with my 90-300 lens and its going to be a big crop to geta good shot of the moon.

Maybe I'm missing it but according to their image policy you can use their images without their permission except for ones they don't own themselves. What copyright issues are you referring to?

I'm talking about other images which they don't have, like people are always tempted to pull of someone else's web gallery ... : (

I was suggesting you look there (NASA) for pictures from the dark side of the moon, since no one participating in this forum is likely to have the opportunity, although they're making a fair attempt right now -- when both sides will be "dark."

ok, ran outside, and decided that i can infact shoot from the back garden despite the fact that it resembles a jungle and i need to traverse and obstacle course to get to it. should be fun with a bottle of port in hand :P
