Very nice shot. Just wondered, he said that he exposed it for 30 seconds (By this I assume the shutter was open for 30 seconds) and then there was a flash. Just wondering, with an exposure that long, why the flash. This must sound like a noob question, but how would the image have been different had there been no flash?

The tree would probably have been a black silhouette without the flash.

The flash makes the tree stand out and you can see colours in the tree. Without the flash it would just have been a dark silhouette against the sky.

The flash added some light and colour to the grass as well.

(and it's a fantastic picture IMO)

It is a great picture.

So basically, for the short period that flash went off, it produced enough light for the camera to pick up the colors of the tree? I'm I understanding this correctly?

Look at the bluish illumination on the tree. That's from the flash. If he hadn't used flash, the tree would have been a silhouette.
