Just on the lines of the Critique Club will it be a good idea to have a Comment Club here? Since the comments are mostly left on either very good or very average images - A large numbers of challenge participants are always curious to know why they are having a low vote (mostly 4.5 - 5.5 scores). The members of this club should leave a comment on certain % of the total images in each challenge. To avoid fatigue, these members can be chosen/volunteers for a limited time depending on the time available to them.
Just an idea and would appreciate any Comments... |

I think there are already some members that try to leave comments on a lot of photos. It's not easy to go through and leave detailed and helpful comments on a certain % of photos, especially when there are so many in some of the challenges. I did it with the first 30% of the shots I voted on in the Love challenge, and it took forever. Besides, what I vote a 5 might end up ribboning, and the shots I pick as 10's might end up down in the mid range.
Not everyone here is ready to hear constructive criticism about their shot, and so I think the CC is a good way to make sure that those detailed and helpful comments are being given to people who care to hear the good news with the bad. If an individual is interested in feedback as to why their shot scored low, they can always post it in the forums after the challenge to ask for some help.
I'd like to see DrAchoo reinstate his threads where he would offer to comment on photos in the mid-range after a contest ended. If a few other people helped to comment on the photos posted in that thread, that would be helpful too.
Just my 2 early morning cents.

Thats what i feel that its easy to leave comments on 20-30% of the images but the point is that most of dont do it serially. Its more of a random activity depending on what we like and what we don't like ( The Nude challenge is the only exeption i guess ). If certain people can voluntarily comment on 20 - 30 pictures in the order they pop up, i think it would be much better. Critique club is an ideal situation but a critique takes too much time to write and thus is a rarity ( i got a critique just on one of my 10 entries) |

Why have a comment club at all? All dp needs to do is add one more percentage to the voting. You must comment on _____% of these images. It doesn't have to be high, just maybe 5% or so. I usually comment on around 10% of the images when I vote. Will it deter folks from voting? Maybe, but I have a feeling most do leave at least 5% anyway.
I think that after challenges, it is still best to post images you need more info on because none of the comments supported your low score. I have done that because I can't understand, based on glowing comments, why I ended up below 20% in the ranks. However, I can pretty much figure it out myself once I see the quality of the photos in a challenge, then compare mine, and that usually gives me all the answers I need. |

Some time ago I participated in a club like you comment (//www.dpchallenge.com/forum.php?action=read&FORUM_THREAD_ID=388176). We were 9 people, I think, and we had to leave comments on the open challenge and member challenge of the rest. That way you received 8 very good comments (they weren't just "nice shot", but very deep).
I find that experience a wonderful one, because you make and receive comments every picture you submit.
And 9 was a good number (maybe too much) because if there were more people can be too stressing to comment every week.
I finally had to give up because had no many time, but I hope I can begin a new club in the (not very far) future.
So maybe you can propose a club like this and ask for people to "sign".

I have an idea to go along with the OP:
How about the comment club that doesn't vote??
This would keep people (hopefully) from PMing everyone because of their vote, it would simply be a comment, not nearly as scary.
I, for instance, do not vote in challenges that I enter. But, I would be happy to go and comment on 25% of the photographs without voting. Sometimes, I would even be able to comment more... like 75 or 100%.
If we all just commented on 25% (and didn't vote) on the challenges we are entered in, I think we could cover a lot of ground. Then, we will still be free to vote on the others :) I have a hard time voting after or before commenting but am totally willing to just comment :)
I would also say limit your membership to around 25 or 30 members so the comments don't become overwhelming.
Just an idea :) |

Alex
I saw your tread
It seems very useful
Would like to participate/set on something like that
Are there other interested persons?
I think the challenge from which I learned the most, was my first one.
I have entered a really very bad picture but get some constructive comments
Even the DNMC helped me in order to try to submit more âreadableâ subjects.
On the last one I received a 4.7 score and 3 âlove itâ comments during the vote
Thatâs not exactly what can help you to get better.

In the Best of 2006 Challenge, I voted on all 705, and commented on anything on the right and left of middle ground.
* All 10's, 9', 8's & 7's got a comment on what their image did for me in terms of composition, lighting, emotion, crop, etc.
* All 4's received a comment in regards to what I felt wasn't up to par, and many/most had helpful suggestions left.
* The 5's & 6's got scattered comments as time permitted, and voted nothing under a 4.
When it comes to comments, I feel it equally important to say why a shot made it or didn't make it for you.
Sometimes it's difficult to find things to say about an average shot, yet find no purpose in saying "Nice" or similar.

I think that's a brilliant idea, the comments of a non participating peson will definetly seem more impartial and will be taken well. I am more than willing to do this and if we can make a small and grwoing group here, i think it'll be worth a try |

This thread is great but its still more like - make a comment on the picture above or post your no comment picture. I am talking more about the anxiousness of the participants at the time of voting. Its not necessary that the commentators will be always right but in case the image is not doing too well in the challenge it will definetly provide some pointers

You are selecting only images you think need help? How do you know an image is in the 4.5-5.5 range during the challenge? And how do you make technical comments without knowing ISO, aperture, shutter speed, or, even more important, intent of the photographer? |

By considering the facts of the image. |

Nooooo, it should not be selective. Every image from the start through 20-25% because they are random for everyone (or more if the commenter feels like it) that way every image gets a fair shake and true details about why it's great or why it's not.
Edit to clarify

Well, how about an AYE from everyone interested?? Then you can get a head count.
BTW, count me in! :) AYE |

No, they don't comment during challenges, only after and then only on a select few. |

if more people would be active in CC, more pictures would get critiqued.
so, if i understand it correctly, ya'll are committing to comment on the first 20% or so that you vote on? |

I try to comment on 20% of the challenges I vote on, and I generally hit at least the first half of that on a serial basis - ie comment on them as they pop up on my screen. The last 10% consists of shots that I see something in that I suspect others may not, and the ones that I think really satisfy the challenge well for one reason or another.
I suspect I'm not the only one who comments this way, but I do think your idea will hopefully get more people out there to comment "randomly".
For those truly interested, it's more than just the moment of competition - you can always post a request after a challenge ends to get feedback.

This was my solution. I caved in and joined the Critique Club. It turns out that critiquing activity there is very low recently, so I'm happy to help out. |
