First....Thanks for the tips about getting started on building a webpage. I'm happy to say it's officially under construction now. WAHOO!! Now, I want to add music. What are your favorite sites for downloading music to be added?

I can't help you but I would like to offer in case you don't know. Many people hate music on websites. If i can't figure out in a few seconds how to turn it off i will leave. good luck with your website.

Yes, music on websites is generally one of those design no-nos. It's kind of annoying.

FWIW ... if a webpage has music on it ... I'll just leave and never return ... music is very irritating ... very amateur ... very teenager ...

Yeah, don't put music on. I hate that.

No music no music..
I agree, its annoying....If it doesn't slow down the site, which it usually does I will immediately mute it anyway.
If a page will not let you mute the music I leave...

It is a no-win option.

If I wanted to be listening to music while I was surfing, I'd be listening to music already. It would almost be certain to not be the music you put on your site. Forcing it on me reflects badly on your site.

If I didn't want to listen to music while I was surfing, I wouldn't be listening to it. Forcing it on me reflects badly on your site.

As others have said, every site I hit that has music on gets it turned off straight away. If I can't find the off button in a second, I just close the site and don't come back.

If you want music on your site, have it off by default and make people switch it on. You could track how many visitors turn it on for more than 5 seconds and see how popular it is, I suppose.

agreed ... not only that, but if you want to use a song, like an mp3 or something loading from a flash file, then it also increases the loading time of the site. a BIG no no!! the only files that don't harm load times are midi files, and they sound like crap.

i wouldn't bother with music. it's a web design nightmare ... just like obnoxious animated gifs! :)

There are a lot of neat things that you can do without adding music. Generally creating a website that creates any sounds, (with the exception of games or animation) is frowned upon. You could still do a lot of neat flash stuff.

Me too. If music starts playing when I visit a website I leave instantly.

No, no music :-) I guess that has been said. Other than the annoying part, you do run the risk of copyright violations, especially if your site is for advertising goods or services.

FWIW, I agree with everyone else that it's just annoying. I don't even have music on my Myspace page. :-)

Yeah it's true for me as well, I really hate music on websites... myspace drives me nuts sometimes. Last year the way I had my computer speakers setup was a major problem for website/computer sounds (i have all computer sounds disabled as well). I ran my audio card to a 200 watt bass amp, and had it setup so I could control the volume through itunes (supposedly the only thing that would play). Well anyways, it was comfortable in volume when itunes was at about 15-25% volume. You can imagine what happens when a website chimes in at 100%. :-/

I agree with those who say "don't do it". Been there, heard the complaints, even from customers (and that's bad). Go with a simple elegant web design, but leave off the music and super-flashy effects.

Yep, just say NO to music!!!

hey ... but as in early 90's this was a hit ... retro is always in style. and it will come back stronger than ever.

i'll say. GO FOR IT. put the tunes on your website. :-)

...why? Nothing makes me scramble for the back button faster than being assaulted with music. Not to mention that it's a way to get people who surf at work into trouble.

Another vote to "just say no" to music. Giving a person something they didn't specifically click to get is the fastest way to send people scurrying away from your site, never to return.
