I saw this video on another forum. I'm wondering if this is due to some sort of medical condition or just plain overweight? If it's the last then her parents need a serious mental check! :(

7 year old weighs 400 lbs

DAMN!!! what can you say about that?.. I feel sorry for the poor little child... Parents? Illness?.. I think we may have a case of bad parenting there to be honest I cannot see it as anything else...

I hope she can get it sorted then find some parents that actually give a damn... sorry if I sound a bit abrasive but man o man ... I cannot see it being a strange illness that made her get to 400 pounds, more like iresponsible parents shutting her up with candy so they can do their own thing..

Poor poor child.

I would hazard a guess that it could be a medical condition (genetic), exacerbated by overeating. Sad! Usually more likely it is the overeating part.

181 kg!!!!! that's just wrong.

her weight keeps increasing dramatically, this couldn't be just overeating. there's gotta be something else going on, some kinda illness ... well, that's what i hope because it scares me that parents would let a kid get that big for no medically explainable reason.

btw, see the video clip in the menu on the right?? 4 year old boy but AWESOME drummer!!! :)

As a side, (I work in an ED), we had a parent that would feed their 6 month old half formula and 1/2 Marshmellow cream!! "Because he eats more of it then." 6 months old and 35 pounds!! Looked like a ball with a head on it.

Wo 400 lbs! At least we won't have to worry about a bald eagle swooping down and carrying him away. Sorry, it's the first thought that crossed my mind.

That is pretty sad. What a crappy way to start life. I hope they can help him get better.

I think if it's just overweight it definately is childabuse, and the government should take their parental rights away. The way it is now, she has no future at all. I wonder...doesn't she have to go to school or something?

there's a similar case in Newcastle by the way.

Amazing... we have the same story in UK today.....about a UK kid!

bbc story

They've actually been following this girl's progress on The Insider for a week or so. I've only had it on as background noise for the most part, but I've caught bits and pieces of the story. They did institutionalize her somewhere that specializes in nutrition, and she had shed a good bit of the weight in the most recent story I saw.

EDIT: Now that I've actually watched the video, I see it's from The Insider in the first place. They did several more stories about her.

And editing again to add a link:

You "blame" the parents! No question. :)

There is such a thing as telling your child no, they can't have a hamburger, and telling them that they have to have a salad instead. They will eat it when they get hungry enough. :)

I watched these people on a talk show (Montel I think) and they said that they feed their kids so much because the kids cry for food. (20 hot dogs? I think not)

I say, parents are responsible for teaching their children how to be responsible adults, take care of themselves, and survive in society. Those parents are failing miserably.

For the person who suggested DNA, my sisters and brother (half) have that disorder (never feel full) but they didn't really struggle with weight until they were older (now). It is something that they had to learn to live with when they were younger and, luckily, we have great parents who are very patient. Even now, they aren't HUGELY overweight (except one), just enough to bother them.

Whoever said these kids need to be removed from the environment they are in, you are EXACTLY right. It is irrisponsible for these parents to allow their children to get into a condition that has HUGE potential for harm of their major organs and overall well-being.

:)

I'm sure this media attention is really helping this poor girl.

If it weren't for the media attention I don't think anything would be done. So, yes...I think it's helping. They're treating her now right? She's allready lost some weight?
And hopefully other parents who do these these things to their kids will stop and think of what tey're doing to them.
I just think someone should've stept in much earlier, way before it got out of control like this.

She has had media attention for several years now. She has been a guest on the Maury Povich Show a handful of times over the past couple of years showcasing big babies. (Not that I watch the MPS mind you).

It's not a "medical condition". It's overeating. Did you see the section of the clip where she's putting food in her mouth? It certainly didn't look like a plate of salad she was eating. Her parents are responsible for this.

several years??? has she lost weight since? because surely there must be someone who had the power to stop this, or offer her treatment if het parents couldn't pay for it or something?

Yes, yes. it took the whole world knowing about this for her parents to finally do something. In the mean time, they grew this huge child and paraded her around like a modern day freak show. When she watches home movies of her childhood it will have an ABC logo on the bottom. She will be extremely lucky to come out of this in any sort of normal manner.

Good timing.
I heard part of a story on NPR this morning about whether parents should be legally accountable - negelect - for clinically obese children.

Poor, poor kid. I couldn't watch the whole video, it's just too distressing seeing her gasping for breath. I hope she gets out of this alive.

That's about the one thing you can be guaranteed about. Nobody gets out of this alive.
