The site must be getting hammered this mernin', cuz I cain't get in. But I heard about it on the radio and this list makes it illegal for telemarketers to call you. I cannot stand telemarketers... and I NEVER buy anything they are selling regardless if it's something I want.

Try it sometime later. The address is www.DoNotCall.gov

Please send your thanks in the form of money.

i heard it on the news this morning also. But i think you have to resign up for it every 3 months....but Im sure its well worth it to not get calls about carpet cleaning and refinancing your home...

I signed up for it a while back ago, but via a written letter and that seemed to cut back on the number of calls...

awesome! thank you thank you thank you!
I had heard of this, but didn't know where to find it.

the other thing that sorta works is to not answer "unknown name" (if you have caller ID) when the phone rings. once you pick it up, and hear silence, they have added you to the "active" list, and your number gets distributed to telemarketers.

I know people are just trying to earn a living.. but can they do it without calling me on a Sunday morning at 7 AM?

The report I heard a few minutes ago says people are signing up at a rate of 108/second.

It will not block all calls, however ... read the rules. Also, the whole thing may be thrown out as a result of pending litigation.

There is a similar system for Canadians, operated by the Canadian Marketing Association.

Karen -
I'm pretty sure it's illegal to call before 9am on weekdays and even later on Sundays. I used to work in telemarketing (managing an office, not selling! :P) and we weren't allowed to call before 9am. I'm not really sure about the weekends though, definitely not before 9am. Check state laws & goventment ones too :)

The problem with that is that whole bunches of folks have unlisted or blocked numbers, or just plain the phone system pukes on them, causing them to show up as 'Illinois call' or something. :-> If I didn't answer any call that didn't have valid caller ID info, about half the calls I'd miss would be 'real people.'

I signed up - even if it doesn't block all calls, it blocks some, so it's an improvement. Long-distance people can still call, but there are only a half-dozen or so of them around here, and I can request the do-not-call list for all of those every time they call. Soon I will be FREEEEEEE!!!!

I've been signed up with Wisconsin's Do Not Call list for months. Haven't had a single telemarking call since. =-D

I think it doesn't take effect for a long time, like months and months. It is a registry of people who it will eventually be illegal to call. But still worth doing, if only was a message to lawmakers.

From the website:
"Your phone number will remain on the registry for five years from the date you register (unless you choose to take it off the registry."

It takes effect in October, unless you register later, then it will take effect 3 months after you registered. Fine with me, I don't mind waiting.

We've had a do-not-call registry for about three years here in NY state and for the most part it worked well and it stopped most of the telemarketers...But they have discovered a way around it recently and I've been getting more and more telemarketers calling me. All they have to do is couch their pitch in a free offer or say it's related to research, or offer to have a person come out to your house for a free evaluation and that makes it legal. It's also legal for any religious organization to contact you...jeff

We have a similar law in Pennsylvania, and it has worked out quite well. Even though we have an unlisted number, we had been getting plenty of annoying calls before this went into effect. One of the comical exceptions in our law is that politicians ARE allowed to make unsolicited calls. How convenient for them to make this loophole for themselves!

Just saw a headline on Yahoo news, "1,000 people per second sign up on the do not call list". No wonder I can't get on the site :(
I'll try again tomorrow, thanks for the link BAMaster
