With all the concern that worldwide voters would not have access to given seasonal challenges, urban challenges, etc., I think an awesome challenge would be sunsets and sunrises. The sun MUST be at least framed in the picture, and the horizon of the physical planet EARTH MUST be showing as well. You pick morning or evening, clouds or clear. If clouds are hiding the sun, it must be obvious that the sun is included within the framing. I think everywhere on earth except potentially Alaska and some other Arctic/Antarctic locales should be able to contribute. Even Alaskans should be able to find a way to include the horizon and the sun in a picture. Maybe I'm wrong there, but I THINK they could come close. If you want to do an infrared sunset, that will be acceptable as long as both sun and horizon are in the photo.
Have I made the purpose, idea, and goal of the challenge clear, or will someone immediately begin to question this one too?? :-)

Can I get a picture of my friend's child waking up and title it "son rise?"
-Terry, intentionally being difficult.

Please excuse Terry. We're still working on that "o" vs. "u" thing...

But those of us in Colorado have those pesky mountains in the way! The sun goes behind them before we see purty colors! Does "the sun must be in the picture" mean the sun must be in the picture??

You want to look at 250 sunrises in a row? Remember the fisherman's wife? You might regret what you asked for. I recall someone recently asking for more male nudes and look what she got in SIn. |

And you also have the opportunity to INCLUDE those mountains in your shot, which is an opportunity flatlanders would never have. Okay, so I'll count one vote against a sunrise/sunset challenge. I'll count Club Juggle's vote as a maybe.
I'm just suggesting a short move away from the challenges that are typically geared toward things that the photographer CAN be in complete control of. I want to see all the creative people put their creativity fully into the mechanics of composing and shooting the shot, rather than creating the scene. Show me how good you are at taking a picture, rather than how good you are at making up a scene. This would basically be the exact opposite of the single artificial light challenge. Use all the lights you want, but the greatest natural light MUST be included. And no, a SON is not the SUN :-)

So maybe it's not a perfect idea, but I believe it has some merits. I've seen hundreds of sunsets, and they are never the same. Sure, similar colors and themes, but the landscape plus the air quality can make for some amazing variations. And if you don't want to see 250 of them, well, I don't know. It was a suggestion. If nobody likes it, I'll take pictures of sunsets anyway when I get a chance and put them on PhotoBlink or something. :-)

I LIKE sunset pictures- I like them scattered in the other challenges. I just don't want to be asked to COMPARE them to eachother and look at a million all at once. I even like to take sunset pictures, though I rarely save any. |

That's a really interesting point. Do you think this challenge would be more or less effective as one like 'landscapes', where we'd still get enough variety to make it an exciting challenge to vote on?

hmmmmmm.... I would prefer a broader subject like "landscapes" as mentionned by Drewmedia. I think viewing 250 suns will ruin my cornea! Hihihihi. Might have to put on my shades.
Too much of a good thing....
well tha's my 2 cents worth... |

I would think that would work well. I would be disappointed if sunsets became regarded as the "cliche" shot of that challenge, but I think my primary goal in suggesting the challenge (forcing photogs to LOOK for a good shot instead of inventing it) would still be served. This basically would change the topic to "horizon and sky". I think that would work well.

And Eugene, and the SF Sunset District (oxymoron!), and a few other places... I want to dress three kids in identical outfits and title it Son Set...I actually shoot sunsets & clouds, etc. whenever I can, but I maybe print only one out of every 20 or 30 nowadays...but I burn them all to CD. |
