We're headed to the Grand Canyon for a few days in the beginning of April. It's gonna be the whole family (6- year-old and 3-year-old) and I wonder what the experts think is good to do.
The kids are up for hiking and we like that sort of stuff. I'll probably bring the backpack to carry Laine on the way "up" anything we hike. (yikes!) I see the most popular trail is the Bright Angel trail. We'll be staying just south of the Grand Canyon Village.
Tips, tricks, suggestions?

don't miss the big famous hole in the ground! ;)
enjoy yaself...i found it a bit disappointing considering the cost of getting into the national park...there were lesser canyons in the area that were equally gorgeous and free to traverse.

My cousin lives in Grand Canyon, AZ. Her husband works for the park. My brother is on his way home from a visit there right now. He said they took the helicopter ride and it was just amazing. |

Unfortunately that is Grand Canyon West and we will already be doing more than enough driving for the schnerkins.
Personally I'm quite excited about the second part of the trip which is a visit up to either Lower or Upper Antelope Canyon.
WOO HOO!!!!

Hold on to the dang kids.
I was personally shocked to see the tendency of the tourist idiots to stray very close to the edges. The world is so accustomed to being protected from itself that it's easy to forget that there are no safety rails. You are, literally in many cases, less than 10 feet from falling into oblivion as you walk the common trails. |

Let me know what you find out. I'm going out in May. I'm going with a school group on a trip where we will visit Chaco Canyon, Canyon de Chelly, and the Grand Canyon.

The girls and I really liked the Tusayan Museum and Ruins. We were there in April of last year. |

The Grand Canyon is a great photo opportunity but Page AZ, where Antelope Canyon is located, offers more and more easily accessible photo opportunities than the Grand Canyon itself.
I would not be surprised to hear you say that from a photography standpoint that you like Page better.
Horsehoe Bend, The Toadstools, Navajo Bridge and the possibility of gaining access to photograph "The Wave" in addition to Antelope Canyon are all incredible photo opportunities. On the way to Page from the Grand Canyon there is a place called "Dinosaur Tracks" about a mile or so out of your way on the turnoff to Tuba City if you wanna photograph the footprints of small dinosaurs in the fossilized mud of an ancient riverbed.

If you can...try to catch both the sunrise and sunset at the Canyon. |

It goes without saying that taking panoramas of the Grand Canyon is the way to go to best capture it's full grandeur.
I'd recommend taking portrait oriented individual images for your panoramas with more than one horizontal row of images. 3 rows with 10 images or more might be best. Give them a good overlap of about 30% both horizontally and vertically for best results.
With a 'full frame' camera like your 5D the stitched panoramas even before image processing will be HUGE, but the image quality will be good enough for a super detailed wall sized mural for your office. (I believe that might be tax deductable. LOL!!!)

This is the only part I've seen, during Spring Break (high school). We got there at mid-day, hiked down and had lunch, hiked back up just before dark. We stayed at a Forest Service camp just outside the Park. When we woke up it was snowing, so we left and went to Joshua Tree ... don't think the stupid teenagers had a camera either. |
