The blush shows better if you don't use B+W.
I think some people really are photogenic, and others not. And there are some who look good, but only when photographed by certain people. |

I have noticed in a couple of threads , higher rated photos are "safe shots" and you are penalized for being "daring". What makes a photo daring/safe. Many of the top photos show a very personal side, isn't that more daring than taking a shot to "shock and awe" |

Originally posted by Jon Lucas: Images such as those at positions 11, 17, 19, 46, 56, 57, 70 and 101 (as well as no. 80!!!!) all surpass those in the top 3 (with perhaps the exception of the winner - although this is not as intriguing and humourous a shot as no. 112). |
Quite a few of these photos were also ones that I rated highly with an 8, 9, or even 10. I've found that in quite a few challenges I don't quite agree with the general concensus on which pictures are the best.
When the shots start getting repetitive (e.g.: b/w face shots with half the face barely visible in shadow) my ratings for those photos start going down, and ratings for anything showing a little creativy start going up a lot.
Im actually not too dissapointed at my finish (96) because I think mine really wasn't that creative, and it's also only my 3rd entry, and my first finish under 100, but i think that a lot of the ones you mentioned definatly deserved to be higher than mine and deserved to be a lot higher than they were. |

You keep saying that. Do you mean only one commenter got it? Because I'm not sure how else you'd know what 240+ people got. Even if by "got it" you meant "gave it a 10" (which I don't think you do), that'd still be 4 people. |
Yes, one commenter got it. I don't mean gave it a 10. I mean connected the two images with the whole point of the shot. Look at the ones that beat mine. It's rather ridiculous. And there are a few smiling horses too.

stop insulting people. Obviously everybody took a shot of what they could and what they thought represented them.
In the end the winners were the ones that people felt were the most inspiring shots. |

I took the winning photo in this challenge. I honestly did not think it would be a blue ribbon winner. There were many others that I would have voted higher (e.g. Mavrik's). I just tried to please myself and submit something that might fit the challenge and do better than my average score. Thanks to all those you provided comment during the vote and afterwards. It sure was fun!

Good point, Rob - but it's also mine!!

mmm I ended 211 with my shot and 5 comments. I am still happy with some of the comments .. I was not expecting to do good but I was not expecting that big plunge.
It's almost what I wanted to do (except the horizontal bar) so .. I welcome additional comment on the shot ... Thank you in advance
Lionel
here is a little smaller for the forum.
PS : I am not complaining or whining, I acept the score, I just would like some additional input!

Your shot was awesome and one of my highest scores. I don't mean to say I should have blue ribboned or even yellow ribboned. My only thought was that holding a cam in front of your face and snapping a snapshot probly isn't that photographically stunning...yet there were HOW many of those that beat my shot? lol

hey mav. relax a bit. does no good to complain after it's all over. spend this time getting your speed and B shots together. we still need a 7 or a ribbon for the 720 you know... |

I should have got a blue ribbon. Mine is better then all of yours. So there!
I should have gone wild. Next time I will. You wait and see.
Seriously, I have enjoyed looking at everyones Self portraits. I like both the creative and the straight on shots.

Relax? LOL
I think 90% of this forum still doesn't know how to take me even when I have posted over 500 times and I visit the chatroom. I'm about as far from hyperventilating over this as you can get. I was simply saying it was a waste of time to think my picture through when a 2 second snapshot of a guy sitting on a bench got a far higher score than my thought out "message" picture.
I have a good time. I laugh a lot. Anyone who gets inslutted by anything I have to say is taking me far too seriously.
And *I* need a 7 and ribbon. Not you! ;)

I could make the case that the "straight-on" shots are actually more daring, as opposed to the arty photos where people are mostly concealed or only a small portion of their body shown. Of course, I wasn't able to take a decent photo of either type .... |

Yeah, I spent all my creativity on my profile pic. Going to take me a few months (years) to recover. |

So I'll be honest, I was totally stoked yesterday after winning second place in this challenge, yet after reading all of these posts I feel like all of the fun is gone.
Not everyone is going to agree on who should have won, so why bother picking it all apart afterwards and sapping the fun out of it? |

Hey Pipedreamer, that's part of the fun for a lot of folks around here. Pick things apart and over-analyze everything. Don't let anyone take away your enthusiasm for your very well-deserved ribbon! That was an awesome shot! Take these forums with a grain of salt, and have some fun here yourself! : ) |

I'll ditto that.
You should be stoked-'totally stoked'. Hey you won they didn't.
You're bound to have a few sour grapes out there, but remember the majority is 'sweet'. Enjoy that ribbon.
:)

i think your shot is one of the coolest i have ever seen on this website .. on my graph of creativity vs. execution, it would be extremely high in both categories.

Well, I for one thought that this was a great challenge. I saw a lot of really fun photos of people, and I felt that most were communicative of character and personality, too. I had a LOT of very high scores--more than in most challenges--and I think the one's that won were fantastic.
My personal favorite was this one:
//www.dpchallenge.com/image.php?IMAGE_ID=25281
. . . because it captures so well that film noir look, which I imagine reflects her movie star personality?
But I'm really surprised to see so many negative comments about this challenge, as I found it really fun and saw overall better photography than I've seen in many challenges. |

For this challenge, someone left a comment saying that the expression on my face didnt seem quite right for the challenge. Isnt this a self portrait? How can your facial expression not be quite right for the challenge???

Ah that would be my comment. Probably didn't express myself well on this.
What I was trying to indicate was that for a self portrait, I feel that it should convey something of the person's personality. In this case I just felt the expression was a little lacking and it wasn't giving me a feeling for "who you are". Hope that explains it a little better.
But I know what you mean though. I probably put too much expression into my self portrait and as such got a lot of low votes for it. Those that felt the same way as me about self portraits (ie convey something of the persons character), however rated my pic quite highly.
I actually rated your pic quite high (7) because I liked the soft focus. Looking at the comments on your pic, others thought it was too soft or blurry.
It's all subjective don't forget.
What appeals to one person may not appeal to another. For example, my photo got lots of - contrast is too high - contrast works well, comments.
Don't forget, comments aren't meant to be taken personally. They should be used to help you understand how other people view your photos and help in your overall picture taking.
Take on board those suggestions that will help in your style of photography (not all of them will), but at the very least hopefully you'll have learnt a bit about how others rate your photos.
Richard
