You can't even resize twice - SCalvert got DQ'd for that last time!. |
Really? So, resizing to 640 then doing the save for web to 150 would get you DQ'ed? That's a bit extreme!
I think minimal should be just that....no adjustments except to resize to meet uploading requirements. Where is everyone getting you can sharpen?

You may:
sharpen your entry using your editing software's "sharpen" or equivalent option. The use of customizable sharpening tools, such as Unsharp Mask, is not allowed.
4th rule.

As I understand it, Save for Web is fine - that's just file compression. But using a step-down technique, like from 2000 pixels to 1000 and then to 640 (people do this to avoid jaggies) is not, and that's where Shannon went wrong.
As for sharpening, it's in the Minimal Editing rules:
You may:
* sharpen your entry using your editing software's "sharpen" or equivalent option. The use of customizable sharpening tools, such as Unsharp Mask, is not allowed.

And I think resizing, then saving for web is ok.
Because saving for web doesnt affect the pixel size of the image, it affects the kb size.

Ugh! I can see why people don't want to use the sharpen tool! I thought I'd try it on my entry and "jaggies" everywhere! Thanks for all the advice!

I sharpened mine after I resized it, brought detail back, no jaggies that I can see.

FYI, from clubjuggle
The minimal editing rules only permits you to use any feature of your camera while photographing your entry. Once the scene has been photographed, any additional adjustments are considered post-processing, and fall under the post-processing rules. This means that in the minimal editing rules, you may not adjust your saturation after the fact.
So it appears that any in camera editing post shot is a no-no.

Me too. Made a nice shot, but shooted it in RAW only. But, there will be more days to try. Here an old one...
|
If you get to try this one again, squat or lie down and try to get the horizon and distant landscape under the canopy of the row of trees. Then compose just above the canopy. I bet that would be a top 10 in the right light!

hmmm...I can't figure out this picture, the tree seems to be crooked..
or is the girl crooked? The ground is crooked, yet some of the other plants in the picture seem to be growing upward in the same direction as the girl is standing, so which way is really up? really neat picture you have there. Thanks for sharing. |

yeah, there are a few, but most of them look like this:
...and a joke, that explains the tree situation:
"what do you gotta do, when you get lost in an icelandic forest?
you just stand up."

Yeah regretting posting this: been trying tree shots all week now and can find nothing that comes close to this one yet... The tree is on a steep hill side - in the background you see the hill slope. It was an outtake for the Diagonals challenge (which I should have submitted this image for rather than the one I did lol! ).... It's a giant succulent/cactus tree.

When I entered this challenge I was the 13th entry, now there are more than 10 times that! There go my chances for a top 50 finish!

Of course, I think this tree shot of mine is absolutely gorgeous. That means that it will be in the bottom 50 when all is voted and counted. A sure sign I have a good pic is if I really don't like it, then it usually does well. |

Had a hard time choosing my shot for this one, I had several that turned out really well.
At least the PP was easy...

would you consider a macro of a part of a tree is DNMC?
