Heh. Nice shot btw.
Hey rain, you know that you aren't a real troll if you can't decide that a pic deserves a 1 just from the thumbnail right? Trolls don't just go and CLICK on pics... just ain't right. Might have to comment!

I was actually going to post about not allowing 1-3 votes without commenting (I'm against it), but then this all happened and now I'm just all confused and I'm not sure what to do next or what's . . .

you are allowed to vote however you want without commenting... it reminds us that it is helpful to comment on why we felt it was a poor photograph, but it's not a requirement. |

It's something you should do according to the voting rules.
It's worth remembering when people are giving out < 4 that they are actually saying "I think this photo is truely rubbish". Given that, it might be nice of them to say why they think that.
You know, so that people could try to improve, maybe. |

Geez, and now I've gone and put the thread back on topic (not my intent, really)!

My comment was in response to the part of the thread above where someone (I can't find the post while in post mode myself) said he thought that if you required a comment to vote a 1 or 2 or 3, the trolls wouldn't leave 1s or 2s or 3s anymore (everyone would know they were leaving low scores by their comments).
I'm against the imposition of a requirement that you make a comment if you leave a 1 2 or 3. When I became active here (end of December last year, not very long ago), I came in with a newbie's enthusiasm. When I left a 1 2 or 3, I left a thoughtful comment, usually with a suggestion for improvement. Then I found out that some people are actually trying to get the worst score (the brown ribbon). I'm there, taking my time to try (note: try) to leave considered, helpful comments, and they're simply wasting my time. I don't have enough time for to comment the way I would like to, or to make photos the way I would like to; having that time wasted really gets my goat. I then stopped commenting on 1 2 3 votes (and actually just started voting with the silent masses).
Why don't I just treat all images of that ilk with disdain? Because there are kids here, and teenagers, and new photographers of all ages, and they do not deserve my disdain, they deserve my support. So, in the hopes that most of the people really trying to get this right will end up out of my "1-3" range (reserved for shots that totally perplex me as to subject, technique or challenge relevance), I now intend to focus my comments around the middle, where people are more clearly trying to improve their skills and their art.
So that's my long post on why I would be against implementing a rule that requires commenting on votes from 1-3.

Most submitters really don't want to legislate mandatory comments for all images scored < 4 to improve their photography with constructive comments. What they really want is to prevent mythological troll voting which is the original topic of this discussion.
There is no such thing as troll voting. It gets tiring reading about it all the time. Those that believe in it and keep whining about it either need to prove it or shut up.
True troll voting, if it exists at all, is monitored and eliminated from final results. The truth is there are no more 'troll' votes than there are undeserving 10s in the final results. We never hear people complaining about undeserved 10s now, do we?
People simply need to understand that not everyone is going to like their images. The real trick is to get the average voter to like it. You are best advised to do that. The voter giving an 'average' score gives comments that are ten times more valuable than someone giving yours a 1 because they simply don't like the subject. How does that improve your photography?
Concentrate on the technical quality of your images and avoid controversial interpretations of a challenge topic. Do that and any problems with a low average score will not be because of trolls, it will be YOUR photograph!
Put the blame where it belongs.

For what it's worth, I don't believe there is a "troll" problem here. I think when someone gets a low score they must think it CAN'T BE that someone ACTUALLY doesn't like their image. I think the logic built in to the analysis of the vote patterns would quickly point these people out. Sure, I think some small-minded people will actually succumb to temptation and vote the images they think are best low to give them what they think is an advantage. But you know what? The cream of the crop still rises to the top in spite of the efforts of what I think would be an extremely low number of people who would stoop to this level.
As for leaving comments on images you vote three or less? Why? The score pretty much tells the story. I used to leave comments on images I scored low and all I got for my trouble was a bunch whining PMs essentially telling me to pull my head out of my ass. Nope, not gonna do it.

ok I think you guys aren't understanding me...Its not that I don't think I am capable of scoring a one...I am not saying a bad score MUST be from a Troll...
I said already they make no difference in the overall scheme of things...
BUT :)
Its just that some of us enjoy watching the scores, especially at rollover, and someone going through and voting ones on alot of images, at the same time is kinda a buzz kill.
Maybe I am way off, I do not see that many images in each challenge worth only a one..this is what I refer to as a troll...it is not an excuse for my scores by any means! |
