I'm fairly new here and am really in the dark with this illusion challenge. Could someone steer me in a direction where I could get some examples or suggestions.
Is the winning Garbage photo considered an illusion? Where can I find more to look at to get my brain rolling?

Many thanks,
Marsha

Marsha,

Welcome aboard! I am thinking that the new challenge may have been inspired by a suggestion in the message boards that we have a challenge where people submit photos that look like they disobeyed the rules of the site. In other words, the photos we submit this week should look as though we manipulated them with Photoshop (or other programs) in order to achieve the final result, which would be illegal in many cases.

I would think that shots that show an unusual circumstance will do well... for example, making something look huge when it's really small, etc. And I would suppose that my "Swish!" shot would have been considered an illusion as well... at least I think so!

It's going to be a thought-provoking challenge -- I'm looking forward to seeing the submissions!

marsha, no guidance from me ... i'm still at a loss for ideas (but then, it's still early in the week). however, while i remember the discussion thread that alan is referring to, i don't see anything in the challenge description that says your photo should look as if you used illegal photoshop edits.

what do all the other participants out there think?

My play on it is that they want some sort of illusion of the subject, like it will fool you at first glance or the like. I am without a clue what to shoot this time. Really kind of normal for me this early in the week.

I think my best illusion was in the reflection challenge. My entry placed 6th, giving you all the illusion that I am actually a good photographer. I think since then you've all figured out the truth though.

I don't have a clue what to do for this challenge. I'm thinking something with reflections though.

I didn't mean to imply that this was a requirement for the challenge... I am just thinking this was an inspiration for it, and that may be the mindset we should use to concoct something for this challenge :)

*sigh*

I'm getting sucked back in "against" my wishes... *grin*

I was one (of many?) who suggested the illusions challenge once upon a time. My thinking was along the lines of the trick shot where one person stands far in the distance and another person stands in the foreground with their palm up and out. If you align the two people properly, it looks like there's a "Tom Thumb" (person in the background) standing on the hand of the person in the foreground. (For an example, look at this book.)

This is just a quick easy example, and I'm sure that al you creative people out there can think of others.

Well, here's my thinking...there are certain things that the eye will ALWAYS interpret a certain way and even if it seems 'slightly; wrong by the time it hits the brain it's right. The trick is to switch that!

Some of these include depth (how far is that from you), gravity (what's up or down), horizon (is something upright or tilted), direction (which way is it going/facing).

I think to succeed in this challenge, I am going to have to take the above and play with one or more of them and create something the eye sees right, but the brain doesn't. For example, a downhill slope with a house sitting there, but make the slope horizontal so that the house appears tilted....just an example.

Good luck everyone. z

Or how avout Karen's "Coming/Going" foot prints in the sand which stood in Bas releif insteand of indented because the photo was upside down? that was a good illusion.

I kind of thought that a lot of these pics would be the sort to get DQ requests (not just for editing). If you think it might then it is probably a pretty good illusion. I'm just wondering if we should go ahead and submit the original to get a note ahead of time. I'm afraid, if anyone is any good at this, that we'll get a lot of DQ requests and low scores.
