I always try to give my photo an interesting title - not because the photo won't stand on it's own, but simply to help it along.

Normally I can come up with a title which is interesting without being too complex or obvious (at least I hope my titles fit this criteria), but for the Country Life challenge I am really struggling with my entry.

What do other people do to help them decide on titles? Is there a secret to this trade or is it a gift that some people have and some don't?

Thanks - Mark

PS: I wish I could show my photo and ask suggestions but this would obviously destroy the anonymity of the challenge.

I'm having a tough time titling my country life photo too. I generally don't like to state the obvious but that almost seems best.

i usually title my photos so they point to the challenge topic. for those who are "challenge topic challenged". i.e., those who don't "get it".

the titles for my portfolio submissions are sometimes a little more subtle.

Take a little naps where the roots all twist
Squished a rotten peach in my fist
And dreamed about you, woman,
I poked my finger down inside
Make a little room for it to hide
Nature's candy in my hand or can or a pie

Millions of peaches, peaches for me
Millions of peaches, peaches for free
Millions of peaches, peaches for me
Millions of peaches, peaches for free

The Presidents Of The United States Of America wrote the lyrics. I'm just the Canadian who remembered them. :)

PLEASE use that title. I'll give you a minimum 8...maybe 9.

And doesn't the next bit go something like:

Peaches come from a can
They were put there by a man ...

And I can't remember the next.

Hey Pedro,

I think it should be called Wynona's Big Brown Beaver. Can't get much more country than that can you? No offence meant to members named Wynona of course ;)

Sometimes I visit //www.thesaurus.com to come up with titles. I think of a boring title, type it in there, and get an interesting one back :)

I used //www.babelfish.com a couple of times to translate from English to other languages. It obviously didn't work well for my self-portrait....or I'm just plain butt ugly, or my photography sucks, or a combo of all of the above...ROFL

I have a tiered priority system. I try to associate some kind of cliche or slogan. If that doesn't fit, I try maybe a song title or book title or something of that nature. If that doesn't fit, I go for the boldly obvious keeping it short and to the point. I dislike pointless long titles. Its a title, not an explanation, although there are occasionally photos where you might have to "nudge" the viewer into seeing what they are supposed to see, without giving up too much info, making them still think about it a little. //www.dpchallenge.com/image.php?IMAGE_ID=24102 I did not want to use this title at first, but I felt I had to so maybe the viewers would look close at what was in front of them for what I wanted them to see, as clued in by my title.

I take quite a bit of time thinking of my titles. If nothing works though, go for the obvious. That's my opinion. - BoB

Thanks for the suggestions everyone.

I think I'll pass on the Peaches title though. Normally I try to be a little humourous with my titles but my current photo just doesn't work with anything funny. Anyway, I've changed the title for about the tenth time (I've never changed a title before this entry at all) so I'll leave it alone and see how it goes. Hopefully people like the effect I tried to create.
