Ok well just like it says i just found out were going to mexico at the end of april and first week of may, so i need new glass. Ill have a max of $1000 to spend (what i can save up between now and then) but thats on the very high side, thats not including unexpected things so ill put the max at say... $700?? so give me some ideas.

btw im thinking probably telephoto just cuz of my limited $$, i have the 18-55 kit lens which kinda takes care of the lower end, i have the 50mm 1.8 so i need something that can go further.

I love my 28-135 EF IS. Its a great lens for about 400 bucks, but if you are willing to spend more you might be able to get a EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM for less than a grand on ebay (used).

Let the barrage of suggestions begin!

I'd suggest to check that your equipment insurance covers your gear in Mexico, particularly before you go adding another $1000 worth of lenses

sorry, fyi thats $700-$1000 CAD, thats $592-$846 USD.. (i keep forgetting i gotta tell ppl that lol. I was thinking of getting some filter(s) too, and possibly a remote. Id like to get most of this off of B&H i think. That looks like a nice lens too, how bout a 70-200mm? I might like the wide range better on the 28-135mm u suggested though, the IS sounds nice too, ive never worked with it before though.

70-200 f4 L or maybe the Tamron 28-75 f2.8. Both are less than $700 and good lenses.

It depends how or if your camera is currently insured. Many policies don't cover the gear if you take it out of the country you happen to live in, for example.

Mexico isn't exactly overrun with criminals, but tourists do make a tempting target, particularly with lots of expensive camera equipment. Theft of gear isn't totally uncommon, so it would be worth while making sure that it is insured for the trip. Also if you add an item over a certain value, you may find you need to itemise it before it is covered.

I second the Tamron 28-75 f2.8 - I ADORE mine! I also have the Tamron 17-35 - bought it after the 28 -75 because I loved it so much and to replace my lens kit - I'm as happy as a clam (for now - GRIN!)

i have a 75-300 mm that i love. It's good cause it can get such a range, and doesn't require you to switch unless your shooting close portrait. but it works great for landscape and streetshots

ah ok ty, ill get my dad to look into this, hes the one that knows all this stuff lol. It'd suck to get some nice shiny new glass and have it stolen :( Mind you i keep an iron grip on my stuff all the time lol but it never hurts to have some added security.

Hmm those sound perfect :D It'd all but eliminate my need for the 18-55 kit, the 28-75 seems to be able to do the job quite nicely. I gotta look into some things first (ie// bills) but the price sounds right. Just gotta check the whole insurance thing.

edit: the 70-200 i cant find anything in my price range on B&H but i did find the 70-300mm f/4-5.6 APO DG, for $200ish. Is that a good lens? If its good enough ill have some $$ left over for filters, a remote and stuff, and insurance :P

It is a good lens but it's not as fast, as fast to focus, and not as well built. You should be able to find a 70-200 f/4L for about $580 US online at BH. If you push your budget a little bit more, you might even be able to pick up both since the tamron runs about $350 and is one awesome lens for the price.

ya im really set on the 28-75 now, the images taken with it tells me it can bring the goods, so that one is almost a for sure that im gunna get. MattO is selling one in the buy/sell for $275 i think, im very tempted to get it from him and save a little money, but im also weary of buying from people ive never met, i think for the added peace-of-mind id like to get them from B&H.
02/05/2007 03:53:26 PM · #15
If i were only to get 1 of those 2 lenses, the 28-75 or 70-200, which should i get?? My luck something always comes up and im short on cash. So which should i get out of those 2 should that situation arise?
02/05/2007 03:55:16 PM · #16
I'd suggest a longer lens. Even though you only have the kit lens and a 50mm prime, I think it would be wiser to get a focal length you don't already have. The kit lens will work in a pinch, plus there will be time you wish you had a longer lens.

I believe the 70-200/f4 fits in your price range, however I am not familiar with Canon glass so I am not for sure.
02/05/2007 03:57:41 PM · #17
ok ty thats what i thought. arg i hope i can get the $$ i want both now lol. Maybe i can borrow some money from someone lol. I really wish i didn't have to use the kit lens, i highly dislike it lol. Oh well its a few months away, we'll see what happens

so you guys are sure that the 70-300mm wouldn't be a good idea? Id REALLY like to get both the 58-75 AND a 70-x00, but the 70-300 is more in my price range than the 70-200mm. Just wanna get more opinions before i make up my mind.
02/05/2007 04:07:10 PM · #19
First let me say go price grabber.com or the like and shp around, alot of times will find good vendor and cheaper than B&H.

Next I would suggest a 70-200 or 70-300. Sigma has a nice 70-200 USM IF f2.8 arounf the price range your looking at. Sucker is big and heavy though, but I have used one for portraits, weddings ect..

Next //www.amvona.com and get you a good backpack bag and a light weight tripod, will be easy way to carry all your gear and keep it stowed when traveling for use.

filters...polarizer, and gradient, everything else is gravy.

I have a friend who has the Canon 70-300 and he loves it. It is really up to you. As for the kit lens, I can't vouch for Canon's kit lenses, but if I had a Nikon "kit" lens I would have no qualms about using it. My opinion is unless you need the large aperature or need distorition free images than the kit lens should do just as well.

Good luck and have fun in your trip!

70-300 is fine I use one, it isnt the greatest but it works and you will get nice images the just wont be as sharp or 100% distortion free.

Don't automatically discard the 18-55 lens. Go look at the photos taken with it. Although very inexpensive it's not a bad lens. I was second place in the State Fair of Texas last year with it and there are many more great shots. My first upgrade lens was the 75-300 canon. It was way too soft for me.

If it was me, I'de keep the 18-55 until you have money to replace it and immediately get the Canon 70-200 f/4. Now you will have great coverage from 18 to 200 and it fits your budget. Yes the other wide angles might be better but go for the long this time. Best of luck.

Where in Mexico? I've been to Mexico numerous times and I can't think of anything there that I needed a big telephoto for. Maybe the occassional parrot in the mountains but they usually come land on your drink anyway ;). Lots of interesting stuff to shoot in the places I've been, but I could do them all with my 24-105 or even just my 50mm and my feet.

I agree mr Guy, I just got back from near Cancun and I shot almost everything on the wide side, getting everthing in with my sigma 10-20. I used a long zoom only for family candids and to mess with the compressed DoF. What are you planning to shoot there, and what do you normally like to shoot? Although planning for your trip is good, its quite an investment and you will be able to utilize the lens alot once back. I just got the Tamron 28-75 for Nikon and love it, I don't think I know anyone who hasn't really enjoyed it. Unless they have dropped it, I hear they are not built to take a beating.
