I have been working really hard on my lighting techniques and photography in general. I was hoping to get a good bit of comments on these pics.

I think the first one works best. The visible light in the second doesn't seem to serve any purpose other than to draw attention away from the face.

I like the first one, the lighting is great in it. The back light in the second one pulls my eye away from the subject. JM2C.

Definitely the first one. Remember that human eye will always migrate to the brightest portion of an image and use that to your advantage to lead the eye where you want it to go. In your second image, the spotlight behind the face draws the eye there - totally away from the subject. The spotlight is also hard to look at because its so bright, which would cause the viewer to look away rather than sticking around to view the image longer.
