I don't know quite where to put this, but after Pedro's outstanding comment on my nude entry, I went and browsed through his comments on others. I think he deserves some public praise.

Collectively, it's like taking a quickie photography course.

Thanks, Pedro!

Funny thing I'm going to admit.. I often have gone through Pedro's comments on images to try and learn. He is thoughtful and typically always offers constructive ways to try new things.

I've learned more from going through his comments on images than I have on a lot of online photography tutorials or searches i've done to learn different techniques etc... ;) ~smiles~ Nice work P.

I think threads like this are a bit of a shame. To call out one commentor kind of says that you don't think as much of the comments left by others and is discouraging.

hmyeah.

next time I'm gonna think on comment 100% I'll think about it once more :P

edit to add: thank you Pedro. You know I loved your comment!!!

Hmmm, funny I was thinking just the opposite myself. When someone takes the time to leave as insightful and helpful comments during a challenge (as he did on the nude challenge) I have no problem giving them props. If anything, it might push more to do the same, to take a longer look, to say what they really feel about the photograph and what they might improve on. Not that any comments should be considered less helpful. I'll take a "nice shot" comment anyday. But when someone takes that extra step, then it can become more of a learning experience for both commenter and commentee.

It certainly doesn't discourage me from leaving comments, just pushes me to do a little better. If anything, just to compete with that dork Pedro. ;-)

I couldn't disagree more. Threads like this actively encourage all commenters, IMO, by showing that there are those who DO appreciate thoughtful comments. We have tons of threads on DPC criticizing comments made. I love to see threads praising good comments and good commenters.

I have made a lot6 of thoughtful comments in my time, and I don't feel the least discouraged by this attention being lavished on Pedro for his comments in the nude challenge. Au contraire, this motivated me to go check out these comments, and this in turn has motivated me to get out and do some more commenting.

Idnic and Biteme: where did I say other comments aren't valuable? Of course they are.

I suppose you think Team Suck should stop handing out Yappie awards, too? Lifting up one doesn't mean putting down another. And biteme, commenting on 100% is always appreciated and a valuable contribution.

But here's why I created the thread: I received 14 comments during the nude challenge and one after:
//www.dpchallenge.com/image.php?IMAGE_ID=460034

Scan down the page fast, without reading any of them. Notice anything?

I checked all 15 as being helpful, but I don't see the problem with specifically and publicly thanking someone who left a comment that's many times longer than the norm.

I am all for this thread. Of the 60 comments I recieved Pedros was not only the best of the bunch but the best I have ever recieved on any image. I dont think it takes anything away from the other 59 comments - it just puts his on another level. I appreciate every comment I recieved - good or bad - but Pedros I might have paid for.

yes, Pedro should be commended for carefully studying lovely images of beautiful women. He's really gone above and beyond in giving of himself to carefully consider every curve and pushed himself to pay special attention to the subject matter.

What a trooper ;)

Beautiful women...and one frog. :P

Sorry I wasnt around to thank you for this earlier...I just got back from a 20ish hour drive from Vegas and don't suppose I'm making very much sense.

The simple answer is that I've spent the last few months working hard on learning studio stuff since a) I have time since I have no weddings to shoot in the winter and b) it's too damn cold outside to do anything else. I didn't selectively choose which ones to comment on in this challenge - I offered in a thread and several people PMd me asking for comments. I certainly don't have all of the answers, and I'm sure some of the ones I do have are wrong - but in the end they're just opinions, which I'm happy to offer.

I'm not sure how this kind of thread is a negative reinforcement to commenters, unless the only reason you comment is to get recognition for it. I couldn't care less if anyone other than the recipient ever even sees the comments - they're the ones that were asking for opinions, so as long as they're happy, I'm happy.

Now if you'll excuse me I haven't slept in 4 days and I really need to go to bed :)

see? he just had to get all of the helpful comments out of his system so he'd be free to shout naughty stuff at the strippers in vegas.

you guys think he's all benevolent and all, but it was just a ruse. :)

I thought I was the only one here who got comments from a nude Pedro. I guess I don't feel so special anymore.

Agreed...whoever thought a 20-hour drive AFTER 4 days in Vegas watching the Superbowl was a GOOD idea?
