I propose that it be discussed that signature images should not be embedded through DPChallenge. I don't know how this works right now.. whether it's because people have these images in their portfolios, or if DPC somehow does it through coding when you add images to your signatures, but I would like to know if it's possible that these images can be made so that they are linked through original sources.
This would make it easier for people to get them hidden or adblocked so that we can still see signatures, but not have to be inundated with blinking GIFs, and crazy photos loading forever on longer forum threads.
As it is.. adblocking most of the images means adblocking *every* image on DPC, and that's just silly.
Anyway, something to think about.. I don't propose getting rid of signatures with images in them.. just making it easier for myself, and anyone else, to deal with it on a personal level.

I'm confused...you're asking for signature photos to be hosted elsewhere? Wouldn't that take longer to load? And make less sense?

Why? I adblock individual pics on DPC all the time. |

Heh.. that's an option, but there *are* signatures that are funny or clever, that don't mean going blind.
Just putting it out there. I don't think it's really a stretch to look for a way to have more individual control as to what we have to look at in the forums.

Glen your proposal does have a problem.
Say for instance an image is linked form xyz.com. If that site is having difficulties, it will actually slow the loading of threads even moreso than having them directly coming from DPC.

Teach me the secret... all I get when I try to adblock is losing the ability to see any image on DPC

A good point. I wonder if there's a way to seperate signature images then, and have a way to turn them off individually, without having to turn off signatures completely? I'm open to anything.

You're using Firefox, right? Just right click on the image and choose adblock. It only blocks that image.
(You might need to install the extension if you haven't already.)

Among other things, yes.

This is definitely an option, and one I've availed myself of from time to time. I can see Arty's point, though. If you have signatures turned off, you can't see the links to everyone's PAD or PAW or personal websites. Sometimes it's fun to go check those out!
Every now and then I turn them back on to see what personal projects our users have going, but then the pages start loading slower, and the blinky .gif's take over the page. Depending on who is posting to a thread, it seems like the signatures take up much more room than the content of the post. Eventually I get annoyed again, and turn them off. Unfortunately, that means I don't see the links or fun quotes that I might want to see.
I wonder if anyone else experiences long page-loading times when signatures are turned on? I'm on a DSL connection which is decently fast because I pay a bit extra, but it still seems to get a bit bogged down sometimes....

It's not an anything specific thing.. just something that I've been annoyed with for awhile on a large general scale.. and Saturdays when I have more than 10 minutes to look at a website tends to give me a chance to get things put out there.

Ahh.. I might need the extension then.. currently, if I adblock by right clicking, it blocks EVERY image from the host.

I'm sure it could be coded into DPC to not parse the IMG tags if the user has a filter turned on.

Works like a charm. Signature 29 lines longer than the actual post? Blip. Scary scary userpics (especially if you're using the firefox script to show them in the forums)? Blip. Tired of Slippy's big ol' mug? Blip. |

MK to the rescue.. (for now).
Thanks for the help. I wasn't aware of that extension.
As for the rest of it.. I think it's still something that should be thought about on a coding level. I think it would really be helpful. It would allow personal freedom in signatures, *and* for people that would rather not have to deal with them for whatever reason.
Anyway, thanks for all the responses so far!

True - I wish we would put a little www (and other stuff like fredmiranda) under the persons name on the left. I turned off all sigs a long time ago and I know I miss stuff - but it's better then the junk.
A little code could put images in sigs in a DPC subdomain (sigimages.dpchallenge.com or something) but would need the images to be stored there first - then you have the code skip any img tags from that domain if the person tuns off sig images in options).

I've never really understood why we need images in signatures anyway. Isn't that what portfolios are for? During my previous SC sentence, I lobbied for text-only signatures with line limitations and also for the signature to only appear the first time you post in a thread. Clearly I was in the minority there. So no signatures for me, unfortunately. |

Well, time to lobby again! :) You have help on SC now apparently..
I'm not really for removing signatures *period*.. but I do think that there are ways we can make it the choice of individuals.. just don't know if Langdon/Drew really care to code for it or not.

Lobby again - I've turned off signatures here also to make thread navigation a bit easier and quicker.

i'll be glad to help lobby for some kind of change to the signatures. sometimes it's even hard to find the actual message for all the signature lines.

I think there is nothing wrong with the signatures.. If you don't like them just turn them off Its NOT hard
