I'm going back to the states for a three to five month visit with my family and need to buy a laptop more suitable for editing photos on than the little 12" LG I have now. I wanted to buy a Macbook Pro, but now I keep reading things about problems with the monitors, among other things. Hopefully, the versions out now have fewer problems, but I'm a little nervous about spending all that money only to have a lousy screen. This will be my only computer while I'm away.

Do any of you know anything about whether most or just some of the Macbooks have these issues or if it's just problems from the first couple of versions?

Scalvert?

We've had a new Macbook for about 3 months (not a Pro). The screen is gorgeous and we've never had a problem. Keep in mind that the problems you see posted on the internet are disproportionately skewed because only pissed off people generally end up there posting. The millions of satisfied customers rarely have need to go to those places in the first place. Check out the ratings at Consumer Reports or other objective organizations for customer satisfaction. Apple has generally done pretty well in that department, as well as customer support.

I've had my 17" MacBook Pro since early summer and have not had a bit of trouble with it. My friend has had his for about 5 months and has no trouble with his either.

I think this Consumer Reports article is free for nonsubscribers, but link may have problems:

I've had Macs for a long time now and the MacBook Pro (provided by the company, woohoo!!) I've got at the moment is by a long way the best one yet. Not had any probs at all with it. I can thoroughly recommend the glossy screen, too (a no-cost option). Do beware, however, if you are switching from a PC, you might end up having to transfer software licenses from Windows to Mac and that might well incur a cost.

I'm typing on a MacBook Pro right now. I only got it a little before Christmas, but no problems. Laptops in general aren't exactly ideal for editing, but THIS one was edited on the laptop with a fair degree of confidence, and it'll handle a huge external monitor as a primary or secondary display.

You can check out reliability HERE. Bear in mind that this will also be skewed toward those with problems, but note the very high degree of satisfaction. ;-)

I have one, and love it. NO problems. The first run of them had a few glitches all of which have been sorted out as far as I know.

Wow, thanks for all the answers and links! Scalvert addressed editing a little bit, but have any of you others edited for challenges much on your Macbook? It's hard for me to believe I'll be away from my awesome 19" CRT such a long time.

I'm really happy to read such positive answers, because I want a Mac, but just felt discouraged by what I've read earlier. My main computer is a PowerMac, so I'm already sold on Apple. It's just that I've only had pc laptops before now.
