I recently purchased a 4G SD card for the second slot beside my 4G CF in my 1DMkII. However, I am unable to format the SD card in the camera. I get the message "Unable to format - change card". I can format the CF card without problem. Also, I am able to use the SD card in the camera, formatted via computer.

Any ideas as to how to format in-camera or why it can't be done? Seems strange that the 4G CF formats, but not the 4G SD.

Not sure, but the 4Gb support was added very recently in the last firmware patch. Maybe it was CF only for formating ? Worth checking the release notes on that.

Though the big difference between CF and SD is that CF has the memory controller in the card and SD the memory controller is in the camera, so I'm not too surprised that the fix to support CF completely is easier than the fix to support SD completely.

Gordon, I'll check the release notes on that...it makes sense that the SD may not format due to the differences that you noted. I had forgotten about the memory controller issues you mentioned.

Install the latest firmware. It worked for me. Unfortunately, the 4G SD card I got does not live up to performance expectations. That's a problem I'm currently taking up with the supplier. The latest firmware also enables formatting of CF cards larger than 8G

The latest 1D II Firmware update added suppport for SDHC cards of 4GB and higher capacity and CF cards of 12GB or more.

Ah, I'd read it somewhere that that latest firmware added 4Gb support for CF, I see (or at least imply) that that was already supported from the release notes. The SD memory controller thing is probably why it caps out at 4Gb but CF can go as high as available. My 0.3Mp HP Point and shoot from 1998 can use 2Gb CF cards - the LCD just gets confused about how many shots it can take and blinks 999

All my cards are cheap little 2Gb cards, so I'd passed on that upgrade.
