I have been a photographer for a few years now as a hobby. On occasion I have filled in for professional friends of mine for both studio and field work. (weddings/dance studios/basketball games/etc.) This christmas I got my first DSLR and am looking into joining a Stock Photo site (as many here at DPC seem to have done) to see if I could make a little money off of it. What site do ya'll recommend, and what are the general lessons I should follow in submitting photos to these sites? |

just took a quick look at your profile- you'll do well :0)
You can never be too sure about what they accept. what gets accepted at one site might get rejected from another! |

I would highly recommend doing a search of the forums on this as there have been several long threads relating to it recently :) |

sorry about not searching the forums... I've been on this site for a while, but haven't done much, so I'm still learning the modus operandi. I appreciate your help. |

I sell from
iStockphoto
Dreamstime
123 Royalty Free
Fotolia
Canstockphoto
Shutterstock for some reason has rejected me as a photographer all together (based on my my originally submitted files at registration) so I probably won't go back there. Ironically enough the files in question at Shutterstock are some of my best sellers at the other sites... :-)

I might do that, who knows for now though.
Do you do much in the way of business thru them?

It's funny, a lot of people list Dreamstime as one of their top places. Personally, I'm not too sure about them, they just don't seem to like me. ;) They reject a lot of stuff that the other sites snap up and sell. I'm still trying to figure out what exactly it is they want, and a lot of times what they take and reject seems to contradict the vibes I got the time before. *sigh* Oh well, I'm new at this, but it's still baffling.

They do seem to be a bit fussier (and sometimes reject photos that go on to be good solid sellers on other sites!); I suspect the reason people list DT as 'good' is that you get more per sale ($0.50 vsa. $0.20 at Shutterstock).
In terms of raw sales Shutterstock is my runaway winner, but in actual earnings DT is top of my list (despite them rejecting some of my higher earning images!)

I find all the sites reject different images than another. Some of my best on one site get rejected by another....But don't let that get you down. Just keep uploading!
