Bogen/Manfrotto
Do any of you have this or another Grip Action Tripod. If so, how stable are the grip action handles and can the center column swivel easily for Panoramas?
Also, I'm looking for something very light and of course steady built. Lightweight is important ...any suggestions?

It's the head that's grip-action, not the tripod. This is a combo deal. The center column does not swivel on Manfrotto tripods; it is triangular for rigidity. And even if it DID, then you'd have an up-and-down problem at the same time. I'm not a fan of that head. I played with it in the store and I thought it was too imprecise. They do make another ballhead, I forget the model number, that has a rotating plate for panoramas. Also, that head will only support 7.4 lbs, which is not much at all if you get any big glass...

I used one for a night shoot with a nice breeze/wind. Mixed results, with some very long exposures so I'm not sure where to put the blame.
I don't recal what model the system was but it seemed to have potential. Probably won't go in that direction.
I think I need something that can handle at least 11 lbs.

I used to have the JOYSTICK upright version it was fairly rigid and I would say a lot more secure than the newer side-winder style they have now but when all is said and done I much prefer the older 3-way heads I have a 141 and it is solid as a rock. If a ballhead is what you WANT then I think Robert suggested the best thing with the swivel head.

| I have virtually the same system you are considering though mine is the vertical grip handle. I love the simplicity of it and the speed but it is heavy and not nearly as satble as I would have hoped for. In retrospect, the horizontal handle's grip would like remedy the instability issue but likely not the weight. I hike with mine and curse that darn thing more often than not so if that is your purpose, dont do it, get the standard lighter weight ballhead. If not, you wont be disappointed. Hope that helps a bit. |

I have one. It works well for some things and is terrible for others. The biggest problems that I found were that when you squeeze the grip the camera will move in any direction. This can be good but makes shooting panoramics next to impossible. When you adjust the tension enough to hold heavier lenses the ball will not move as freely with the grip depressed. It sticks at the begining. I also found myself releasing the grip just above where I wanted to focus, so that it would settle on my focus point.

I had that head and didn't like it. It works OK for most things, but if you are using a long lens (with a collar tripod mount) and a battery grip on your camera, you are going to have to run into problems.

I was looking at a similar tripod set-up myself.
Are there any other heads that people can suggest in the same price range?
This was the kit that I was looking at.

I have that head, and for the most part, I like it. It's not well suited for anything that needs precise motion in one plane only i.e. panoramas. When you squeeze the grip, the camera is free to move in any direction. If you want to do panos, you need a head that will allow rotation about one axis at a time like a 3way head or a ball head with a pano feature.
It is fairly easy to reconfigure with the grip on either side of the camera or into a vertical grip.

OK! Scratch the Grip. NEXT!
Any experience with Geared Heads?
They look nice. I haven't had any experience with them but they look like tilt pans.
