I've cropped, cloned out a red mark on his hip, resized, USM, and saved for web.

Natural lighting - he's laying on the couch with a black sheet over it (no, it's not ironed). Yes, I used my tripod, and a 2-second timer so I wasn't touching the camera at all. EXIF data is on the photo page.

I'm about 4 feet away from the baby I'd guess - maybe 5.

I think I should have used ISO 100 not 50.

That looks excellent - now - how do I do that ?
01/28/2007 12:46:51 PM · #4
it was just a simple curves adjustment, then selected the baby and filled the bg with black. i also increased the sat on the eyes. i was gonna try andmiake the bg white but the shadows didnt work out. inmy experience blue eyes look better with babies on a white bg, it gives more of an angelic quality to the photo. :)

My quick and dirty version... I prefer black and white for newborn photography.

That's quite nice too.

I use Photoshop Elements 4.0 - there isn't a curves adjustment in it.

you should still be ok, play around with the levels a little bit until you get that look, just keep in minad that the black bg is going to have to be recreated after the adjustment.

Some glow created with a gaussian blur layer in overlay mode on top of a B/W conversion.

ETA: I had to try something, since the wee bairn's my namesake :-)

Download this.. It adds curves, channel mixer and selective color to Photoshop Elements!

ETA: Oh wait. You said you have Elements 4. I think it says on that website it doesn't work with that yet. If you have Elements 3 it will though.

Ayup ... I concur. Beautiful treatment.

Robert ... your online name here and your photographic work and your sharing kindness brings me always to think of a super quote that I will share with you here.

Only when the Last Tree has been cut down,
Only when the Last River has been poisoned,
Only when the Last Fish has been caught,
Only Then will you realize that Money Cannot be Eaten.
Cree Indian Prophesy

I don't wanna hijack the thread here but wanted to spontaneously thank Robert for this and many of his contributions here at DPC in this way.

I'll break with the crowd and say I am not a fan of the soft glow - on this particular image anyway.

Here's a 3 minute job:

NeatImaged slightly
Converted to BW using Levels
Adjusted levels to get the desired tones
NeatImaged again - even more slightly
Added color to produce subtle sepia look (little red, little yellow)

Lots of ways to go with this shot - especially with the original large image. All a matter of taste / preference.

I did a combination of what everyone has said so far. One thing that really bugged me about the original and all the edits is that the wee baby seemed so tilted. It looked like he was going to slip off the table to me so I leveled him out a little.

I tried a few ways to soften the blotchy look of the skin that all babies get. I didn't like any of my attempts, but Art's looks very nice. I also tried tinting the photo like Art did and realized that blue tint on babies is BAD, heh. Every mom's nightmare.. crikey! Art's sepia looks pretty natural without terrifying the mom, heh.

Good eye! Good call! I agree.

Here is my take at it. CS2 used for this.
Adjusted with shadows/highlight
Adjusted levels on each channel to remove color cast
Saturated a little
Added a curves layer to bring the mid range down, while masking with a gaussian blur of the original (helped to add alittle extra contrast)
Inverse selected around the baby to remove the sheet.

Sharpened flatted image with USM at 172 % rad 0.7 Thresh 3

Desaturate if you like BW. I like to see the texture in the skin (blotchy) so I left it on purpose.

The blotchy doesn't bother me as much as the greenish skin ... which I hope I'm not the only one seeing.

Here's my stab at it:

crop & rotate
Shadow/highlight
Desaturated in hue/sat
Duplicate layer, blend: soft light, scaled back to about 65-70%
color balance: mids to red, highlights to yellow, shadows to blue
Neat Image (advanced, "keep more detail" option)
smart sharpen
gothic glow
a little more color tinkering with hue slider and color balance...
and voila!

The green was the first thing I saw, heh

My guess is ... that this boy (when he is a teenager) is gonna HATE the fact that this photo ever existed, especially if he ever finds out about how many people discussed his blotchy skin and ... stuff ... heh

That green belly makes him look like a CSI victim.

Edit for spelling correction ...
