I'm looking for someone who has used both of these flashes to tell me what the significant differences from a user-standpoint are... Please only if you have used both :)

I have both. The 550 is cheaper. The 580 is smaller and the interface is more user-friendly. The 580 also adjusts its zoom according to which camera you put it on (1.6x crop versus full frame, for example).
I use both. Most often the 580 is on camera and the 550 is functioning as a slave. But if I have two cameras going, then the 580 is on one camera and the 550 on another. Both work very well.

Anything besides the size and user interface?

580EX recycles a LOT faster than the 550EX.

If your concern is recycle time, have you investigated external powerpacks? They have the same voltage, but some will push more current into the charging circuit and charge the capacitors more rapidly.

I have looked at Canon's external battery pack. I'm not sure if it would allow me to function properly as a sports photographer... the cable might get in my way.

Quantum also makes some great battery packs. I had one with my Metz "potato masher" it was great. Heavy, yes, but great performance.
This one goes under the camera like a battery grip.
