Yay!
A number of pictures of mine of a huge fire here in Escondido, CA were published online today by Reuters.
I tried the local papers, but they more than enough media coverage already
and didn't seem interested, so I gave the global market a shot and bingo!

They are published in a slideshow on their You Witness News website, in the upper right corner called
You Witness News Slideshows
This week's best pics
Images selected by Reuters editors from pictures sent to You Witness News.
(they are in process of fixing a pic in the slideshow that was duplicated)

Pretty cool. Pretty cool.

Very cool pictures and congrats on getting them on Reuters! I really like the last one and the one of the ladder against the smoke.

Fantastic photos Brad - you sure were in the thick of it too. Congrats on the national coverage.

Nice job. Tells the story well.

Congrat's Brad. I think the portrait mode ones are the strongest--really nice. The third and fourth are my favs.

One weird thing: there are two pics of the portrait style crane (the fourth, and the last) which are virtually identical except a few pixels were shaved off the borders (it gets a little bigger when you go between them). Curious, if they are just messed up or did you submit two like that?

They do have a goof and noted that in the original post.
I got an email back from them saying it's being fixed.

Congrats to you. Good shooting and good that you got them to the right people. I like the portrait ones too, but having them in context with the rest of the story makes them even better.

Great shots Brad and congrats on getting in the "Big Leagues"! Would it be wrong to remind you to not play with matches? ;-)
01/25/2007 12:57:51 PM · #14
Darn!
I completely missed a perfect opportunity for the matches challenge now that you mention it.

:))

Great shots and congrats, Brad! They nicely convey a lot of emotion when viewed as a series - from the firefighters sitting on the ground with the hose, to the view with the street name, to the view with the sign proclaiming all the new condos that are now going to take a whole lot longer to get finished. Very nice work, and way to go!

Great pictures and well captured. Hope you get more published. One worries me though, the one of the fireman up the ladder training the hose on the fire, and the big hairy caterpillar thingie climbing up to get him:))

Joking!

very cool, brad! that's almost as cool as winning a ton of blue ribbons, isn't it ;-)

SO what does Reuters pay for web publishing Brad?

BTW Congrats some cool shots.

very nice Brad. the black and white close shot of the guy with the hose between his legs is FANTASTIC. I really love it.

Congrats, Brad. Good work.

Congrats Brad :)

I'm concerned about stuff like "You Witness News." Did you get any compensation? The big news agencies are getting smart :)
01/25/2007 02:41:39 PM · #22
This was a freebie.

I had some good shots, but no local agency needed any as they had their own staff there. Wasn't big enough of a story for major agencies to pay for, so I thought I'd toss a few at Reuters to see what happened, never in a million years thinking they would be published. Yeah, they are smart, having photojournalists all over the world that work for free.

They way I figure it, it's a stepping stone that cost me nothing, and can only help, especially here in California, in regards to getting a freelance / press pass. (not real easy to get) Oh and it's really cool to see them published too.
:)

Someone had told me about this earlier and I haven't decided if I want to participate yet. I'm undecided as to whether or not there is any benefit in it for me. I do understand the benefit of the larger agency though.

That third one would have been a great entry. In fact, stick that one in your portfolio, would you?
