In his article, "In Search of Style", he wrote:
"The central process of art is not to render something exactly as it appears, but to simplify it so that meaning, clarity, emotional response, and a sense of order combine to create a style from within. Each photographer has the potential to select out powerful personal visions that other people may find beautiful."

Well, while were on the subject of great quotes from Galen Rowell. Here is one of my favorites from his book, "Mountain Light."
"Each time I pick up a camera I'm trying to say something. I'm trying to communicate my view of the world and to share those high moments when what I see and what I feel are a single experience. Mechanical competence with a camera is just half of the equation. The best images come from a blend of technical discipline and creative thought, a meld of left-brain/right-brain action. Only then can a photographer merge, for an instant, his camera's way of seeing the world with his own."

"Mountain Light" opened up the world of photography to me. I bought the book once it was released in paperback back in the late '80's, and have read it many, many times. Each time I pick it up I find something new, making connections that I had missed, despite having read it over and over again. To me, his skill as a writer often matched, and at times exceeded, his ability with a camera.

The best part about Mountain Light is that he explains each photo and how he "sees" it, which is invaluable.
