I am kinda new - entered my 3rd challenge. I got a 1 rating with a comment, so I pm'd the voter. My intention was NOT to dispute the rating, but to ask what was meant by certain terms used within the comment. Naturally, I read the voter's comment history for the challenge and the comments were amazing, on the mark and well thought out. I prefaced my PM carefully, then asked my questions. What came back was a very thoughtful reply that not only explained terms, but also offered guides for me in future challenges for how to be more successful with entries.

So my point is - when you post a low rating, throw a bone out there so we can learn. That 1 rating I got with the feedback has really made a difference for me. JMHO

That's great to hear. With all the whinging that goes on here...your thread is like a breath of fresh air. Thankyou for sharing that with us.

Kudos to both yourself, for responding in a considered, careful manner, and to the commentor, both for leaving constructive criticism and for providing the additional guidance.
You definitely will learn more from yoiur mistakes than from your successes. I know that's been very true for me.

With any luck this will start a trend of more responsible voting and commenting, but I won't hold my breath!

I thought it would be better to post the benefits of comments rather than demand folks obey the prompt when posting low.

Awesome that you had the courage to ask more about the low vote!! Equally wonderful is the fact that the person responded to your inquiry in a thoughtful and helpful way... Thanks for sharing.

I agree...I don't hold anything against someone who gives me a low vote, but I really appreciate it when they explain why they did. :)

Oh..I have a question too. Is it ok to PM someone about a comment they left when the voting it still going on for that challenge?

I don't think its so much as courage as mutual respect and common courtesy as Ive found in the past even addressing negative comments its usually better to go in with mature and calm comments and or questions than it is to go in all upset with guns blazing.

either way as Judi said it is refreshing to see a post like this and Kudos to both of you and thanks for the post. :)

Generally speaking, I leave PM's until after the challenge unless there is something that they said that shows an obvious misunderstanding of some element of the photo.

For example, when I got a comment on a photo complaining of a muddy and gloomy sky, I sent a PM reminding the person that the intent of the photo was to show a muddy and gloomy sky as could be seen by the context of the photo and the title.

With in-challenge PM's, I usually feel that it's appropriate to word my PM's as an 'explanation' and follow it up with a brief note that I am neither requesting nor expecting a change in vote... it probably makes little difference in the end anyhow.

I have received both positive and negative responses to this approach, but generally it's positive.
