Cambodian "jungle girl" struggles to adapt -- (Reuters, Jan 19, 2007)

I thought Reuters was a reliable news source. How can this story be true? My daughter is 8 years old and I'm sure if she were ever lost in a jungle she wouldn't take to crawling in preference to walking, nevermind forget how to speak, or not ask someone for help when she got hungry/cold enough.

What's up?
What do you think?

I saw a show in this sort of thing recently (maybe on The Learning Channel?). They're called feral children. If you google, there's quite a bit of info. My guess is that this story is true as well.

I think she could forget how to speak. She had no contact with other humans for so long, no reason to talk and nothing to hear, it's reasonable that she would forget how to speak. I know the mother of a friend of mine was raised French and moved to Newfoundland when she was in her early 20's (got married). She forgot most of her French except for a few songs and basic words.

What's hard to understand? At 8 years old you've barely adapted to a 'human' way of living and then you spend the next 18 years adapting to an environment where you dont need to speak and where crawling is probably easier to get around than walking. Where you likely have to avoid being eaten by bigger and stronger creatures. You've also experienced freedom and were able to do whatever you wanted and now she has to wear clothes, speak, and follow a set of rules that humans have to follow. No wonder she wants to go back.

It's kinda like the Greystoke movie.

Obviously not reliable - that's FOUR words! :)

The part that was really disturbing was one of their last statements:

"After 18 years in the wilderness, police said she was able to say only four words: father, mother, slippy and stomach ache."

I tend to think the last 2 words were basically the same...

It is sort of like DPC. When you first come here you can't understand anything that is going on. People are strange, there are weird jokes being told that don't make any sense followed up by weird nudes with guys heads glued/photoshoped on them. But after a while you adapt, learn a new language and understand what the fuss is about.

If they were to pull you away from it, you probably wouldn't make much sense to those around you or in a diffrent photo forum.

I'm guessing we don't and won't know the whole true story.

Thanks mk, I thought this was just fictional, like Tarzan etc. It's amazing... Link to Feral Child on Wikipedia

I think that's a bit extreme. I left Cuba at 14 and have spoken English only on daily basis for the past 6 years or so but I have not forgotten my Spanish and I probably never will. I understand if you emigrate when you are still a child but in your 20s or even teens, there is no reason why you should forget even if you don't speak your native language on a daily basis. I'm not saying this is the case with the mother of your friend but some people choose to "forget" their native tongue, which I think is pretty lame. I knew a few like that.

I don't know... I've known quite a few people who forgot their native language after moving to a new country when they were in their late 20s, early 30s... it happens.

also, "stomach ache" is probably one word in her native language. what's surprising to me is that she remembers any words at all

haven't you guys ever seen what happens to people when they are locked up? like children who are kept in the basement? I could only imagine that being lost in a jungle would definitely result in this sort of thing

It does. Every day I feel I know a little less English. Of course I am not learning any new languages- just growing stupider day by day. I wrote a buisness letter today and am positive that I have lost every bit of punctuation I ever learned.

cukeBaHki looks like one word to me if the Khmer language translator is correct.

EDIT: Oops. That won't look right without the font installed.
