I've been taking the course from New York Institute of Photography. It's not bad but I am also taking classes through Penn State. The NYI classes reinforce what I get at PSU and I found that the one covers the techniques well (NYI) while the other covers the artistic freedoms extremly well. But so far the best class I have found is the one that the vo-tech did here for digital cameras. It covered the basics breifly and covered some editing issues.

As far as NYI's digital goes...it's not the best they admit they are still learning a lot.

I really enjoyed the courses at www.betterphoto.com I realise it isn't via the mail. I looked at NYIP, but after I didn't sign up for a month they started sending me $400 discount offers and the like and it sounded a bit too desperate. I don't have a VCR anyway so it wasn't much use.

I bought the NYIP course when I was first got serious about photography and thought I wanted to be a professional photographer.

I finished the first half of the course, which covered the basics really well. The second half of the course was geared towards professional specialties like advertising, fashion, weddings, portraits, etc., none of which I'm interested in.

By the end of the first half of the course, I'd decided I didn't want to be a full-time professional -- I just wanted to take really good pictures, and maybe sell or exhibit photos on a small scale. The equipment required for the second half of the course gets kind of costly. With just the first half of the course, I felt I'd gotten my money's worth (though I may go back and work through the rest of the materials at some point just for the fun of it).

What I also got that made the course worthwhile was a VERY good sense of what is involved in being a professional photographer and how to get started in the business -- both as a photographer and as a businessperson.

I guess it depends what you're looking for.

If you don't know much about photography yet and you're thinking about training to be a professional, NYIP is worth the money. If you're basically looking for self-improvement, one of the online or college courses is probably a better bet.

Hope that helps some. Ruth :)

I heard on another board that RIT has a correspondence program going. Haven't checked it out to see for sure, but that would be nice.
