I read in d200 specs that its RAW file size is 15MB. Can anybody explain me why it is so large compared to d70 where it is only ~5-6MB? The pixel count differs by less than a factor of 2... Is it more bits or less compression, or both?
Thx! - Lev

15mb is the uncompressed RAW on the D200.
The D70 uses compression.
edit: compressed D200 Raws are 8-10mb typically.

yea, on the D200 you can turn RAW compression on or off.
To make things more confusing the remaining number of images counter on the D200 acts like you are always shooting uncompressed RAW files (when shooting RAW).
So your counter may say you have 200 shots left when in reality you have 300 left. So the picture count is more of a "on the safe side, only figure you have this many shots left" |

FWIW, it makes little sense to turn the compression off since the compression is lossless.
Nikon likely only included the ability to turn it of to calm the complaints from perfectionists that trust nothing.

| With the D200 you can even change the compression for jpegs as well. |

Well, that I know, any half-decent camera can do that :).... Oh, I guess you meant that d200 allows to control compression of jpegs saved together with raws. True, my d70 only allws to save basic jpegs with raws. On the other hand, it has been quite sufficient for me: for snapshots and throw-away shots basic is enough, and keepers I always re-create from RAWs anyway. |

hang on ...
my 2gig card gives me 121 uncompressed raw files. if i compress them, it's still gonna tell me 121 shots available??
that's just stupid.
and what happens when i reach the 121? can i keep shooting until it says "card full"?

As the free space goes down, the number adjusts accordingly. It must recalculate the remaining shots after each shot. You can then use it more like an estimate (or at least this many shots free.)
