It's also good for food photography, making things look wet longer and keeping those "beads of water" nice and still on the lettuce.
I've used sugar-water also, though it's not as thick by far, but does stick well to surfaces when sprayed. |

The biggest advantage to using glycerine in food photography is that it doesn't evaporate under hot studio lights -- your frosty beverage glass looks nice and cold for many shots.

I was with you up to there -- I thought glycerine was a fatty compound, not a sugar.
FWIW--Cornhuskers Lotion is mostly glycerine, and may be more widely avaiable, though not quite as crystal-clear. |

And if you get it on anything plastiky rubbery (like the eyecap piece on the camera), you can never get rid of it again. Mine (eyecap) still is sticky and leaves smudges on my glasses from when I got some on it in January of last year. |

If you can't find it, just ask the lady at the pharmacy department, she'll know where it is. |

Try wiping it with a cloth and rubbing alcohol (or vodka). |

Also for bodies, for sweat and tears that don't evaporate or run too much.
You can also find it in craft stores with the soap-making supplies, but it's probably two to three times the price there of in a pharmacy. |

"Full Metal Ursula Attack"? More like "Ursula 1.0 Beta". :P
Just kidding but I have to give Ursula her props. Her flower shots take a life of their own and seize being just flowers with drops on it. Heck, they could pass for life forms from another planet!

I could be mistaken, but I think Tim was using a 50mm. |
Sorry for my lack of detail in my portfolio images. All three of my shots were taken with my 50mm and some cheap (under $15) extension rings. THese were my first experiments with them and my intention was to imitate Ursulas images all the way. Unfortunately only one came out even remotely like hers. I willpost some more of my extension ring experiments soon. Though I would much rather have the proper macro lens.

Ah well...not too bad for a first attempt?
I need to go up to Massachusetts today so I'll re-launch my attack from there. At least I won't have a pesky, insurgent Cat (Muqtada al-Cat) to contend with. The little bastard knocked over my entire set-up twice.

Actually, it's a sugar alcohol. The pure form is more properly referred to as glycerol |

mix it 50-50 with water so you don't get the air bubbles in the droplets. shake the container well before spritzing.

This stuff is also used with soap to produce those supper monster bubbles you see at the bubble contests. The glycerine keeps the soap film from drying out so the bubbles last longer and can get bigger. The exact amount that some of the high level bubble creaters use is a state secrete, but it can be as much as 50% or more added to soap water (I hear Dawn is good for making bubbles). So if you want to create that bubble that devours and carries off your neighbors yappy dog (or whinny kid), just mix lots of glycerine in your bubble solution. ;)

Still only a dilettante but seriously getting in touch with my feminine side. Didn't even know I had one.
No Glycerin, here. I need to find the right stuff to use it on.

Reinforcements are coming pawdrix. I just got back from Fairchild Botanical Gardens a few minutes ago and decided to check these forums while downloading some ammo, uh, I mean some flower shots.
Camera battery just died, so I'll have to change batteries and start downloading again, but I'll have some shots on the way soon. |

Another from today to show you all that I'm not going totally soft.
I did try to put some Glycerin on this guy but he was having none of it. However, he did agree to tear up some flowers for me.

I searched and searched for glycerin today to no avail. I did find glycerin suppositories. lol. I'm not sure what they look like but if it's glycerin inside a softish shell I wonder if I can just poke a hole in it and use those. Anyone know what the deal is with those? and have the guts to post it? or you could PM me. I won't tell ;) |
