Western NC has a lot of photo ops, but frankly, I think I would like a change of pace. I can take pictures of the mountains anyday and everyday. Plus, it would be nice for Bernard and I to make a mini-vacation out of it as well. (That is, if he agrees). So, whereever is fine. and whatever is fine. I will do what I can! :-)

As far as the photo ops go, Savannah probably wins.
However, Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg really aren't all that expensive if you go in April/May, and it is possible to get a private mtn cabin with a hot tub if you want.
I guess a big issue is just what exactly do ppl want to do? If we wanna just take pictures then Pigeon Forge might not be best. If we wanna just meet and hang out, have a picnic and play in the creek, or drive around Cades Cove then it's great. It seems to me that city folks might like it more than those of us who're used to it.
I'd love to get to the beach and the historic houses of Savannah. My personal issue is that the kids will be in school, and I'd have a hard time going that far away without them. Also, does it make a difference as to who can come? I'd rather have it where more ppl can come. |

BTW, I didn't mean that there aren't any photo ops around here.
I have pics from around Gatlinburg in my
Smoky Mountain gallery
and some from Biltmore Estate in Asheville, NC in my
Biltmore gallery |

I just did some research on Charleston. I checked for the dates of April 2 through April 4. After checking several hotels I found out that beginning the second week of March and running through the third week of May are the highest rates of the year in Charleston.
What I did find out is the weekend I chose to work with is one of three weekends that festivals are going on and there isn't a room to be found downtown. I did check rates then for the airport area and I found that Super 8 at 2311 Ashley Phosphate Rd. had the lowest rates at 51.88, the Hampton Inn at 11 Ashley Pointe Dr. the highest without any discounts $139/night, Days Inn at 2998 W. Montague Avenue, 80.44 a night, Radisson Hotel Charleston Airport 5991 Rivers Ave., 89 to 105 a night. I got the rates through Orbitz and they do go lower with things such as AAA, AARP, and Hotel Discount Catds.
As for attractions and events in March and April here are a few things I found for Charleston.
Charleston Festival of House and Garden

The Bridge Run

Special Attractions
//www.audubon.org/local/sanctuary/beidler/
//www.boonehallplantation.com/splash.asp
tours and special attractions
//www.charleston.com/tours/index.html
Now I think I will check out another of the locations discussed. =o) |

Actually Charleston is very bad the last two weeks of March and the first three weeks of April, plus Easter gets thrown in there the second weekend...oh well Charleston was just my first one to check for info on I'm working on Gatlinburg/Pigeon Forge right now to see what I can find out |

I think you'll find that G/PF around that time is pretty reasonable, as far as rates, etc. Pay close attention to when the Rod Runs and car shows are. Traffic stops for hours at a time during these events. The only viable action is to get out and walk. Also, there will weekends where absolutely nothing is happening, and it is like you are in a ghost town.
I recommend if you want to go here, get a group together and rent a house. There are some nice cabins/chalets in the area that can sleep 10 or 14 comfortably.
edited to make this crazy post try and make sense

Maybe Savannah would be the best bet. Any of these locations are gonna be busy that time of year. |

Pigeon Forge had signs up for $29.99 in the beginning of May. It's not really until June that it gets busy (except for those dang car shows). |

How about if we plan a GTG for the fall (first part of October) in the Smoky Mts since that's the best time to go anyway. You just have to find a hotel in advance. Anyone who can come is welcome to. Even if that only means that Karma comes over and we go shopping :P
Then we can do Savannah and the beach in the spring. |

As for the fall thats two soon for me to really be able to go and truly enjoy myself. I live on a tight budget and got to have the time to save for each trip...not to mention my husbands vacation time is gone for this year.

yeah. I understand that it might rule out some ppl who have to travel very far. It makes a nice weekend jaunt though for those of us living closer though. Fall really IS the best time to see the Smokys
By next spring, some ppl might have gotten fed up with dpc and disappeared anyway ;P |

I will officially say Savannah for next spring. I wouldn't mind checking the Smokey Mountains out this fall as another GTG. |

I have friends that own a hotel in Cherokee,NC, and would be willing to give pretty cheap room rates in September or November. October is completely booked.

The drive over the mts from NC to Gatlinburg is awesome in the fall. Last year's leaves peaked late so we actually found a room in Asheville and then took the backway home to TN. The good thing for me is that if I don't find a hotel I can always just drive home ;P |
