Through a lot of different threads, there has been a lot of focus on comments and getting comments and not getting any comments. I was just thinking that I feel really bad for people who don't get any comments during a challenge and that it would be really nice if maybe during the voting stage we could see a counter of how many comments an image had and maybe even someday have a sort function. So that if someone had a spare hour it would be easy enough to pop in and pull up all the images that didn't have any comments and, even if they couldn't vote, they could at least try to give a comment.

I think this might be a really good way to go because it wouldn't imply any requirement or nagging emails or anything. In addition, a lot of people seem to want to keep their given count higher than their received count, and these people especially could hunt out pictures with no comments and make everyone just that much happier.

Just a thought. Since we already keep a tally of comments for the entrants themselves, it may even be a relatively simple thing to show that number with the entry as well.

((Edited to add: just occurred to me because I have a spare 30 minutes at work and read a few threads about how few comments people are getting - thought if only I could pull up images with low comment counts, I'd drop off a comment!))

I think this is a nice idea in theory, and could certainly be a useful feature on some level, but I suspect that if implemented, it could play a hand in swaying voter's attention to certain images...if one is looking at the thumbs and see a shot with 25 comments as opposed to most every other shot's 3 comments or fewer, one might be inclined to see what all the brouhaha is about with the more-commented image. I don't know if voters would consciously be impacted in this way, but subconsciously, I'm sure there would be potential for misuse in some way.

I tend to agree. You could simply leave comments for the "comment needy" after the challenge. So maybe implement the OPs idea after the challenge is over.

I agree. I think it's bad enough that you can pick and choose which thumbnail to click on to begin voting. If the thumbnails showed how many comments each image had, then cherry-picking would be even more widespread, because generally humans are like sheep.

But yeah, if somehow this was useful after the challenge, go for it.

Or maybe a better idea is a random image feature. When you have some spare time and you want to do some comments during a challenge you can click on the random image and it will throw up an image from a group of 'low to no' comments received. No one can see at a glance as to which images would be in this group...so it would be a bit of a lucky dip...but the author of the image would be grateful.

This could be quite fun.

What about a button to filter down to pictures with no comments only ? As the challenge went on this would be a smaller and smaller pool and would hopefully encourage someone to say something about the picture.

I was thinking more that it could be implemented like the comment filter. Like there's that link that says something like "show pictures you haven't commented on" or where you can search by score "show all pictures I gave a 7 to" or something... maybe a link like "show all pictures with < 5 comments" (this could be incremental - 5, 10, 15) or "show all images with 0 comments".

That could probably work. However, I think for fairness it should only work after the person has voted on their randomly allocated 20%.

Or, join the Critique Club. The photos that you are given to comment on are ones that people asked for help with. :)

Oooh, scary. Maybe someday! I think that implies a certain level of knowledge, though, and I wouldn't dream of claiming that.

I really like this idea but I agree it could have a negative impact on voting.

So perhaps as a compromise have a button that says "I'm finished voting" and then once you've clicked that you get to see what photos are in need of comments. Maybe also show which photos have checked off "indepth critique" during submission as those you know are looking for critiques and not just comments?

The thing I don't like about the CC is it's randomly generated when you go in to critique. I hate that. I much rather choose which photos I'd like to critique and pass on ones I don't. It's not about picking the easier ones either. Sometimes I can't get what the photographer had in mind, what his goals were and I'd much rather not mess with those.
