What the hell did you buy tho Makka ?
Mine were $15 each from Ebay and haven't missed a shot. Only downside is there's no remote firing from my L-358 which would save time.

Every time I read a thread about Alien Bees, I get so jealous. They seem wonderful, cheap, and now there are great inexpensive radio triggers too.
See, the problem is the voltage.........the rest of the world is restricted to 220-240V, not like USA.
I think AB used to make high voltage units, but have discontinued that...am I right? Such a pity.........I'd be making a big international mail order purchase. |

2 of mine came with sync cords, one did not... not sure why as I never remember seeing it in the text either time. If yours doesn't have one - though it should, they're cheap, like $7 or less. Order an extra because you WILL trip over it sometime and the little end will get mishapen and the tolerance is so close that you'll never reshape it again no matter what you try! lol

OMG Tony -- how large is your space? An AB1600 would light a good portion of a stadium!! My 400s are too much power for my studio, but I like them for the extra capacity and the 800 is great on location (larger rooms)... but a 1600?? Sheeesh!

Tony a 1600 is a lottttt of light, are you gonna be diffusing it a lot?
I use two lumedyne 400's to light half a college BBall court man. It's enough light to shoot at like iso 400-640, and that's only at like 1/2 power.
anyways, I wish I owned some nice lights haha. |

Well, I heard that with a large softbox, it's best to have a lot of power. Mayby I will knock it down to 2 B800s and 2 B400s. My studio is 16 feet by 25 feet, but I only have 8 foot ceilings. I also setup in my garage if I need the height (it's has 14 foot ceilings, but I never needed more than 10.
Thanks for the input. I worry about their transmitter/reciver and if they are reliable. It seems that all the others are a lot more money. Please keep us up to date on their performance. I know I can't use a wire.

My space is similar, 21X20 with 9' celings -- For that I would recommend 3 400s and an 800 - but of course, choose what you think works best for you. As for the triggers, I only shot about 30 shots while goofing with my daughter and her friend. I had a few misfires - not on the strobe with the reciever, but on one opposite it. Much like with sync cord when I block one light - I moved it slightly and it fired properly after that.

Can you use 2 or more receivers? One on each side, or on a unit that's sort of hidden from line of sight.
Added: for only $40 more if you can add another one, to reduce misfires, it might be worth it.
Did you get a Beauty Dish? I put one in my list, to experiment with because I heard so much good about them.

Yeah, you could have one per light if you want, you tell your transmitter what channel you want to shoot on (to avoid misfires from other photographers nearby) and you program the receiver(s) to recognize that channel, so yeah, you can.
No Beauty Dish, Softbox will accomplish that function better. I did reverse the cover on my 5' reflector so the gold side faces outward now instead of the silver side and that gives a great golden glow, that helped.

You might have saved me a few hundred bucks!
Added: I just can't wait until I could take a picture every second instead every 5 to 10 secinds. I miss so many good expressions.

You can send the excess $$s to me! lol My 30D shoots 5fps and the bees have never had a problem keeping up. If I hold the shutter for about 2 or 3 minutes they will eventually heat up and one will trip, but then I deserve the abuse I've given it lol wait a minute and reset the on button (like a breaker in your fusebox) and you're off & going again!
