I just went and did what I have been asking others to do for me. I have commented on some entries that I had scored really low for the Office challenge. I always say, "Well if you're going to give me a bad score, please tell me why so I'll learn from it." So I decided to practice what I preach. Believe me, it doesn't feel good tearing someone's work to pieces. However I do believe that this is better than saying nothing at all, even though I know it unrealistic to comment on everything. For anyone whose work I ripped apart please take it in the spirit that it was given. And remember it's just one person's opinion and if you look at my average I'm no hot shot myself. Cheers. :)

I get the best, nicest replies when I "tear someones shot apart". I'm nice about it though usually. The positive replies make me feel really good about being honest and detailed. I do feel bad saying "this shot really doesn't appeal much to me". but hey, then at least that person knows that if they were going to try to sell it, it wouldn't be sold to me. Some people like some things, some people don't. And like you say, it's only one opinion, but chances are, someone else thought it, and was too shy to say so.
Keep up the dirty work, someone has to do it.
Also, it does really help to also find something good to comment on as well.

I have found that almost all photos have many good elements. It often only takes one sour element to distract one into thinking the whole photo is bad. Recognizing the good while seeing the distractions has really helped me immensely.

There is nothing wrong with tearing apart a shot just do it constructively. |

I referred to somebody's image as gory and therefore not pleasing to me and received a number of PMs about it that largely came down to complaints about my view. Kind of frustrating when you explain why you're voting low and somebody tries to *argue* with you about it.

An aside to my original message: if you have any comments on my critiquing, please, by all means PM me.....please just wait until the voting is done. Even though I'd never change my vote, one way or another, knowing who entered the image, I think I'd feel a little uncomfortable just knowing.
Another aside: Has anyone noticed a drop off in comments in the past couple of challenges? Maybe just plain indifference to my images of late. :) Cheers.

just keep in mind that "tearing apart," should mean constructively criticising the photo, so that you are tearing specific aspects of the work and trying to explain what you don't find appealing about it. it sucks to get comments that say your work sucks with what the commenter thinks is an explaination at the time, but really isn't at all, such as 'I don't really know what you were trying to do with the exposure.' That doesn't help anyone. Explain what you dont like about it and how it could be improved on.
ps. (yes you got me!) lol. i dont even care about getting bad feedback, i just thought it was funny that you said in the post that you were sorry for tearing it apart, when you really didn't do any tearing at all other than saying that it was garbage. nice of you to comment anyway though, better than those other 1 droppers who run away and hide! |

Might be the time of year. It is finally getting warmer in some parts of the world. I am enjoying 80 degrees today rather than the unending rain and grey weather New England has been sporting lately. Also, lots of people ending school and moving right now. Hang tight! It will resume! :) |

I'd do the rest, but if I see one more depiction of honey I am going to scream. |
