300 to 600mm is pretty common for that kind of portrait shooting (along with walkie-talkies to get the assistants doing the right thing and so on)

There is some advantage to using a big lens on beach shots... they will allow you to stop way down and still get a nice shallow DoF. And, you get to impress those super models with your big honkin' lens :-)

I checked the RAW file in Breezebrowser, and the focus point selected apparently was the far right (in this case top) focus point. It lies about half on the subject's right (our left) cheek and half on her hair. We don't, of course, know if there was some recomposition, but apparently the focus should have at least locked on the area of the face.

FWIW, I really like the 200mm focal length for portraits, even on APS-C cams. On FF 35mm, I'd be tempted to try even longer, perhaps 300mm. A 300/2.8 would be luscious. I don't find that compresion of features is a problem at all.
