Your fireworks are definitely a strong contender. You probably broke most of Jeff's rules for success.

Hopefully tomorrow we can take restart the OOBIE and YAPPIE nominations.

I think we should have an fearless leader decision and award the YAPPIE award anyway even if the butterflies fluttered away. Larus? e301?

Still asleep.

We could give it to both of 'em. We've given more than one before.

And at least part of my fireworks shot is in focus, and though the lighting is soft, it's, well, lit. Which is different than well-lit, of course.

Okay.....would someone be so kind as to bring me up to speed and give me the ten-cent tour of Team Suck?

So far everything I have learned has been spotty and I'm kind of under the impression that the guidebook's still at the printer's......8>)

I gather basically what an OOBIE and a Yappie are, but can I get semi-official descriptions?

How often are these awards granted; is there a party, too?

Do I get to vote?

Will I get told to shut up if I ask too many questions, or will I just be ignored?

Here are a couple of threads you can check out:
OOBIES
Yappies

The Team Suck team with the highest average as determined by Don's Magic Math gets to put out the call for nominations (open to all), then a determination of the winner is made by the winning team (who can probably be swayed with open messages or PMs, by the way.)

I found the rule book somewhere.

RULES FOR PLAYING ON TEAM SUCK:

1. Enter a challenge now and then.

2. Do not pander to the lowest common denominator, at least not with any success.

3. Suck.

4. Do whatever your spiritual leader, posthumous, commands.

5. (or 1.) Always get the rules exactly the wrong way round.

Okay.....ruling for index, please....

Is this person just friendly obnoxious or do we unleash the beasts, hunt her down, and dispose of the body in the hidden quarry?

Or dance in the firelight with our oiled bodies glistening while she turns on a spit......seasoned with a light basil garlic?

Just wondering......

I'm in for "Best of 2006" (I've only been waiting 7 months to enter this shot) and I'm in for "Song Titles".

How about everyone else?

My "Centered" is still hanging on at 6.3887.

I'm in Best Of. I'm hoping for a PB with it. I'm trying to recruit some of my daughters friends for Song Titles. If not, I really don't want to try B&W portrait but I might. My procrastination has fallen to 4.8, which is still more than I thought it would get.

I'm sure Scarlett is Mostly Harmless. We should encourage visitors to the shrine of Suck. aye.

For whoever is doing the OOBies, I think Deb really does deserve it for her fireworks entry.

The team standings are due out tomorrow.

Warning - I might start nagging the blue ribbon team about the OOBIE and YAPPIE awards if a thread doesn't appear within a day after the standings are announced.

We have 6 challenges (harsh, 12 days, free study, fireworks, centered, and fence) to review for OOBIE and YAPPIE. I would hold nominations for these challenges until we have a new thread going - it's easy to lose track of these without a dedicated thread.

Tonight we should at least announce the YAPPIE ( larus and e301)-I am such a suckhead I've lost track of any OOBIE nominations.

Sound OK?

I'll offer a bit of a counterargument to Jeff's point #6 about distractions. Sometimes photography is to record, not to create "art" - sure some of the great painters might omit the power lines in the distance behind the tree, and in advanced editing, feel free to do so if they're not a major element. But I'm weird. Not only do I quite frequently like blown highlights in places, I like elements that are there when you shoot. Including power lines. I will try to compose my shot so something glaring doesn't steal the attention from whatever I'm shooting, but I don't think every picture needs to be "pure and sparkling clean" - unless of course, you want higher scores on DPC. In my opinion a lot of times if you take too much out out, you take away a picture's character.

But do let me reiterate - I'm weird, and I don't win ribbons.

Let's review how I introduced my guidelines: "checklist for "Best of 2006" that I think will help you score highly"

And let's review what I said at the end:
"if your goal is just to enter what you like, and scores don't matter, then happily ignore all of that and enjoy the comments."

So I agree with everything you said, Deb: do what you like if scores don't matter to you.

Note that nowhere did I say "pick a subject that's just like what everyone else is shooting." In or out of the box, the basic guidelines for high scores stand.

That said, let's look at your fireworks entry, which someone suggested violated most of my guidelines, because I think you nailed every one.

Here's the thumb for those who missed it:

1) Subject: Very clear subject here.

2) Focus: Dead-on sharp. And good use of DOF to make non-subject stuff blurry (helping reduce distractions).

3) Lighting: natural light and taken from an angle that produces some nice shadows.

4) Contrast: in shape, color, and brightness, it's different from the rest of the frame.

5) Composition: not even close to dead center. In fact, so off-center that someone suggested cropping off some stuff from the top.

6) Distractions. Zero. The textures in the concrete help place the shot, but don't distract.

As a final summary, then, Deb applied all of those guidelines to an out of the box entry and came up with a success. I don't mean she took my post with her, just that she successfully did all of them because she's, frankly, a good photographer. A blurry, centered, dim, low contrast shot wouldn't have been nearly as good.

I'm going through this not so much to defend what I suggested as to say more clearly that choice of subject is one thing, and out of the box is often very interesting. But a good shot of an out of the box subject is still a good shot. Certainly in the average voter's mind, anyway.

I'm here for the humor and goodwill, too. On that note, I'd like to say for the benefit of anyone considering joining us or recent members that we don't "suck" in that our pictures are crap. Rather, we choose to go our own way, at least at times, without worrying so much about what score we're going to get. Of course, I may be the member closest to the average voter in terms of my tastes.

Oh, and we're also a safe haven for everyone who has a love for learning and doesn't feel like competing in a league.

Okay....

All that being said, it seems to me that we have a pretty decent selection of OOBers here.

I gave that shot a 5 for basic meeting the challenge and technical skills.

I gave it the extra point making my vote a 6 for the OOB context of it NOT being another "Rocket's Red Glare" shot.

Does that seem like a sound, reasonable, typical Team Suck way for me to have voted that pic?

EDIT: An amusing side note.....the average between the score and the commenters average puts it at about a 6!

To my mind, that's PERFECT. :) Had I voted that challenge, that's exactly how I would've gone. Might even have gone up to 7.

Edited to add that Larus commented that he gave Deb's shot a 7. Posthumous, there's hope for him yet! :)

okay... i promise to never ever ever use the word "crap" when describing my photography again.

I do have to say that although it was indeed out of the box, it failed TRUE Team Suck criteria in that it didn't get a Posthumous comment. But I was kinda tickled with the 7 from Larus. And thanks for the analysis. I did rather like that one, actually.

I know better. Really, really I do. But I just can't help myself. I entered song titles.

Why do I do this to myself week after week, you may wonder? I really do not know. :-)

Well Deb, You should see what I entered for Song Titles. This was my attempt at trying something that I never have tried before. I know, I can say that I am trying to grow as a photographer!

Anyway, it was the only idea I could come up with and I can guarantee that my picture has nothing to do with what the song was written about.
01/09/2007 04:45:49 PM · #650
I may enter song title - there are these things on my camera that I took on my way to work this morning waiting to be looked at. Who knows what carp I might find?

I can't enter black and white because I am convinced sepia is black and white and I would just have to do sepia.
