i am not upset about the score here, but when i was editing this for the challenge - i was pretty excited about the result.
not many of the comments mentioned much about the negatives of the image - entered in the pattern challenge. at 640px - 100% quality it weighs in at about 550KB !!

Pretty good score for it. Might look a little better if all of the marble were in frame? Hard to say, it's very out there. |

No, no it wouldn't. I'm surprised by the score as well. Very low for this image.

Dude, regardless of any artistic virtues, it hurts to look at. Literally, I had to force my brain to stare at it longer, like getting too close to one of those awful black/white patterns they used to put on ties.

i understand the pain - it's part of why i thought it worked perfect for the pattern challenge. it's the pattern that makes your eyes hurt !!

here is one with the marble fully in the frame.

thanks for the comments.
ralfw - i'll try to find some to time to acheive the effect you mention. being the basic editing rules - there was no way for me to mask - had i been able to use masking the end result may have been a bit more dramatic!
thanks again all !!

my curiosity stems from whether or not i should do a few more of these. my original intention was to do just that. the negative feedback will help me with setting up future compositions.

Looks like you already got some good feedback but I'll chime in if you want some more.
The main issue I have with this is the patterns are not harmonious enough or chaotic enough. There seems to be a bit of a compromise between the two which I think makes for a less impactful image. If you could get the distinct patterns to mesh more (less DOF?) or show more friction I think that would help. Also, your title leaves much to be desired. This is an abstract image so tell me what your abstract idea is. Maybe just call it "Madness" instead of "Marble Madness"?

at f:22 - any less and the screen or top of marble would fall OOF.
i'm not sure what you mean by friction. not chaotic enough? maybe some torn holes/edges in the screen would add the chaos you seek?
maybe the color adjustments were overboard.
here is the original image

I commented on this during the voting (comments should show I liked it); in contrast, I don't like the one with the marble fully in frame. As for the original, I guess I bought the patterns being so critical to overall feel of the image. I must admit, on your image, being so clearly within the challenge and creating so dramatic an impression (at least on me; like others, I had to work to look at it, and that worked for me), I did not "analyse" it very stringently. It was that initial impression, which stayed with me each time I saw it, that I liked. Pretty sure I bumped it from a first pass 8 to the final 9 I gave it.
Sorry I can't be more critical!

I know you are a good photog soup, so you can handle the criticism. The picture scored exactly where it should have.
A) It's too busy. By your own admission "...an effort to combine as many patterns as possible". I feel it's the photographic equivalent of wearing spots and stripes.
B) The main pattern is a black grid. A black grid is far from dynamic in terms of artistic merit.
I'm not saying it's a terrible shot, 5.8 isn't too bad a score, but I don't think it should have scored much higher. |

that's exactly the kind of thing i'm looking for. the score is of no importance - really!
upon entering - i thought it would go over better - it didn't - i got mainly positive comments during the challenge. that left me wondering this week what it was that garnered the poorer scores. i'm seeing why now.
as far as the black grid - i like the illusion it creates in a macro. i've got a few spider shots similar to this marble thing. some seem to love it - some seem to hate it. perfectly fine. those that do can enjoy as i'll likely use the old screen fom time to time... ;}
i guess i failed to create the right dynamics with the black screen. artistic merit - that's as subjective as the interpretation of a challenge topic ;}

I gave this image a 9. I found it very dynamic. I did wonder what it would look like if the left side was cropped into the marble to match the top. When I gave it a try, it seemed like the marble provided a better anchor for the image. Not necessarily better, but different that way.

I actually like the original much better. The colors seem to blend so much nicer together. It's easier to look at. Not that my opinion matters much, I gave this a 6 in voting.

it was the green cast that bugged me, and i figured it would be frowned upon - ie: color cast - calibrate your monitor ;}
thanks
